Wow. Thank you to my reading friend, Phyllis, for finding this book. A definite read-aloud for the first week of school.

What impressed me most was my students’ reaction to this book. Over a week later, they still reference it. They clearly wanted an happier ending and also completely understood why they didn’t get one. I love that it still has them thinking.
I use this book over and over. The story is beautiful and there is so much rich learning within.
This is a serious picture book, and reminds me of the kinds of books with beautiful, realistic, painterly illustrations that I read as a little girl sometimes. I appreciate that this book is what it is, and doesn't try to tie everything up in a neat happy bow. A good story about the unkindness of children to a new girl at school who is poor, and the repercussions it has. Each act of kindness creates ripples and can change the world. Great discussion starter, good for discussions of kindness or poverty.

If only every child could read this, every human and feel the deep sadness and understand how kindness opens hearts and leads to possibilities. My heart hurt reading this. (Read it--it's short!)
This book prompted some great conversations with my 6 and 4 year olds.
A simply & powerfully told, beautifully illustrated story of bullying.
