Each kindness changes the world like the ripples in water when a stone is dropped into it. Take advantage of opportunities to be kind to others before the chance is gone.
What a wonderful lesson this book can teach us all. We don't think about how mean we can be with our little gestures or our silence. We don't realize what kind of impact that can have on others. We don't know what a kind word would mean to someone. Each little kindness makes a ripple in the pond, a ripple that goes on and on.
It is rare when a book has its protagonist reflect on mistakes they made and cannot rectify them. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful, as always with Woodson’s books.

Oh my gosh, this one broke my heart. It's a great lesson on kindness, welcoming the new kid in class and not judging people based on their appearance or on how others treat them. It's a great accompaniment with The Hundred Dresses. Another great book to pair with it would be One Green Apple by Eve Bunting.
Very reminiscent of The Hundred Dresses. Wonderful example of missed chances and the importance of kindness.
Great story about kindness; perfect fit for character ed theme.
Not your typical picture book...sad and honest. My heart broke just a little for Maya; she is the new girl and is immediately an outcast. I eventually also felt bad for Chloe once she realizes the missed opportunity to be kind and make a new friend. Also worth noting - this book was gorgeously illustrated with water color paintings. Beautiful!
Beautiful and moving modern story about how we can make people feel. I pair this with The HUnderd Dresses by Eleanor Estes written in 1944. I teach that bullying is not anything new and we can always choose to be kind. I love this book.
A deceptively simple story about how girls treat a new student and the powerful lesson a teacher gives about kindness. I love the imagery of the water's ripples.
