This is a book that all parents should read to their children. It's a little treasure with a timeless message. I couldn't love Jacqueline Woodson more.
I love Jacqueline Woodson's writing. She creates a story that you can visualize through her words. Unfortunately, the image left from this story is still haunting me a couple days later! I say unfortunately because it is a story of lost opportunity and it is sad. However, it is also beautifully written and could certainly be used with a group of school age children to get them thinking about how they treat others. Love it.
Most picture books resolve with problem solved, lesson learned and wrongs righted. Not this one and I think that was good idea. Not all lessons learned in life also include the opportunity to right the wrongs. But the story leaves the reader with a great jumping off point going forward. Loved the way Woodson crafted this story.
Each Kindness written by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by E. B. Lewis, and published by Nancy Paulsen Books / Penguin Group, is the winner of the 2013 Charlotte Zolotow Award.
When a teacher's lesson shines a light on Chloe's poor choices, it prompts her to reflect on "each kindness never shown." A powerful yet sparse book told from the viewpoint of the bully. Woodson, J., & Lewis, E. B. (2012). Each kindness. New York: Nancy Paulsen Books.
Wonderful book to teach about bullying and how to be kind to one another.

I read this book on a day when I was feeling pretty pessimistic about the world in general, feeling conflicted about a responsibility to stay up on what is happening around me versus a need to find hope. This book helped me breathe a little, reminded me that I shouldn't discount my immediate circle of influence even if I feel like external forces are hurting so many. A contender for one I'd like to read to my high school students.

What an amazingly wonderful - and sad - story. I have passed it around the school where I teach for other teachers to read to their students. Thank you, Jacqueline, for this treasure.
