I usually like paranormal thrillers but this one didn’t work for me.

This book has a hurry up and wait feel to it but the ending was worth it. I do wish it were longer to learn more about the lore and supporting characters but overall a good read.

I really enjoyed this one. The Nesting is full of mystery, highly developed characters, and tons of Nordic folklore. If you can read something and let it take you where it wants to, this is the book for you. If you have a hard time getting into the fantasy of ghost stories, maybe not. I just let it drag me around and enjoyed the whiplash it left me with. The atmosphere was my favorite part, by far but I also really loved the main character as well.

Tom Faraday lost his wife, Aurelia, to suicide while he was building her dream house. Through his grief, he wants to continue on without her to honor her with finishing the task. Lexi Ellis takes a new job as Tom’s nanny and really falls in love with his two young daughters who are still mourning the loss of their mother. Something feels off in this isolated house far away from the town. Lexi sees mysterious things constantly and once she find’s Aurelia’s diary things take an even more haunting turn.

I don't know if the main character is intended to be written as sympathetic, but to me she was just so insufferable that I couldn't really get into the story.

It was a great slow build until it came to an abrupt halt and everything was a little too cleanly finalized. Great ambiance created, and skill in developing characters but I can’t believe tidily things ended. Was hoping for more!

I really, really enjoyed this one. I love the idea of taking a beautiful, picturesque setting and making it dark and foreboding, and that's the feel of this book.

My favorite part of this book was the internal dialogue in the characters. There's always something so fascinating to me about how characters might perceive the exact same things in totally different lights. It's always impressive and super-realistic to me when an author can capture that well. The tension in the flashbacks with Aurelia and Tom does that. Cooke does an awesome job of writing that sense of, "Something's just not quite right between us and I don't know how to fix it," feeling.

It wasn't quite what I expected in terms of "scary," but it was still definitely scary. I ended up really liking Lexi as a character, and I loved her relationships with the girls. The plot wasn't absolutely earth-shattering, but it was definitely interesting and kept me going.

I'm excited to read more from Cooke.
