Supremely readable but beset by repetitive phrases, dialogue that could have used firmer editing, and (of course) rampant sexism and racism.
I didn't have a bad time reading--as mentioned, it's pulpy and fun, with some moments of genuinely good prose scattered throughout. Its greatest merit is how it represents the illusion of the "American Dream" and the American justice system, particularly when one is an immigrant or simply non-white. The opening scene with Amerigo Bonasera, where two white-coded young men brutally assault his young daughter and are let off by the courts with what amounts to a slap on the wrist, is strikingly effective. It's also, sadly, all too familiar an occurrence to this day.
As a genre-setting text, I certainly recognize its literary signifcance--and, further, its impact on media as a whole.
I just wanted more depth and confliction from the characters at the end of the day. I'm looking forward to watching the movies for the first time to see if some of that missing oomph can be found.
