Definite fire, definite heat, and lots of good, consensual sex. There was some face-fanning while reading this novella.

Also, Zeus - as always - is such a butthead.

Ok, if you can get past the opening (it is ssssteamy and I can see it turning people off) it is an interesting retelling of Hades and Persephone. Not an abstract retelling but an almost literal retelling with some minor changes.

Rai changes some details of the original myth to make it more palatable, ancient Greeks may not have minded incest laden myths but we do, and filled in a lot of gaps for me. We all know the story, but what about family dynamics between gods? Hades' feelings? His day to day duties? I think Rai did a good job of expanding the story and then some.

content warnings: incest

it was a kind of rushed story. i haven't read many books that used greek mythology as a backdrop but the attempt to make the original incestuous nature of persephone and hades (as he's her uncle in the most popular/common-translated versions of the myth, though it's disputable if persephone's relation only came from her being conflated with several other goddesses early-on) made it pretty uncomfortable when the two characters started hooking up. there's a big show of how she's not technically his niece, only through adoption, so it's okay, which was really skeevy to me. i didn't really enjoy the writing style, and found it to be more of an easy-read, but the minus-two stars is really just from the way the incestuous relation was re-imagined into a still incestuous relation to make it 'okay', but just more distant (
Spoilerpersephone being a shard of gaia still makes her related to hades- gaia was hades' grandmother, so that'd make persephone technically hades' aunt
).
really glad the reimagining didn't include any rape, though that's a fairly low bar to set.

Fun sexy times between Persephone and Hades. I like this recasting of the myth, with the modern-ish takes on the gods, and I especially like the agency and delightful charm of Persephone. Also, magic kink, yes please.

as a self-ascribed hades x persephone stan lover, this was so good!!!! i'm not a huge novella person, but i love alisha rai and have been wanting to read this for a long time!!!! she re-released it with some editing and now it's available on scribd!!!

idk man it was just really cute!!! it wasn't too plot-heavy, but it wasn't only smut, you know? it was a great balance and i think if you're a fan of hades x persephone retellings, then you should check this one out!!!
