Teenagers don’t talk like that. Honestly, no one does. That irritated me. Otherwise it was a pretty good book.

I loved this book. Grant Barrett comes home for 30-day emergency leave from Afghanistan when his brother and sister-in-law are murdered. He comes home to care for his six-year old nephew and four-month old niece. His grief is palpable but he has to be strong for the kids. He is taken with the next door neighbor, Ellie Ross, whose daughter, Julia, babysits the kids sometimes. He is trying hard to figure out why his brother was killed. The police are having little luck. It may be related to a case his brother was working on. Strange things begin to happen and he knows that whatever the killer wanted, he didn't find. This book was very suspenseful. I read it practically in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. And, as a frequent reader of suspense novels I was impressed that I did not figure out what happened until the author told me. It appears this is going to be a series and I can't wait for more books.

Definitely a notch above most of the romantic suspense I've been running across lately. I think what made it work was the whodunit-mystery elements thrown in, adding a bit of meat to the romantic-suspense soup.

I enjoyed this book because of the characters and plot, and despite the author often telling me what a character feels rather than demonstrating it. But this is a three year old work, so I'm hoping her craft improved, since I bought the whole trilogy. :) I really like these characters!
