I honestly didn't finish this book, but I got more than halfway so I'm considering it read.
I will not be finishing it. I was bored to death reading this book. I read it because it is listed on the most disturbing books of all time, and I like disturbing books so I figured I'd try it. The first mini-story about the pool was absolutely gross (which I liked and thought was good) but after that the whole book seemed to fall apart. His writing style completely changed after the beginning and I was so bored with the entire plot. This book should not be listed on the most disturbing books list because anyone who is looking for that type of book will be disappointed with Haunted.

A curious concept, a degenerate execution. Palahniuk rides the line between intellect and debauchery and I love it every single time.
Going through other reviews of this book, I see a lot of negativity. Not surprising because there’s a lot of fucked up things but I feel like those people missed the point, and tbh y’all just might be the punch line 👊🏼

This collection of short stories left me feeling a mix of fascination and disgust. Alongside the stories, theres also a real life plot happening of the "writers' retreat," where a group of people sign up to stay isolated for three months, hoping to produce great works of writing, but instead of writing they mostly behave it disturbing ways.
It's difficult to rate the book as a whole, as the stories vary in quality. Some are engaging—so much so that I'd gladly read a full-length novel based on them—while others feel average, and a few were quite boring.
Overall, the book is an interesting commentary on how humans tend to trap themselves in cycles of misery and embrace a victim mentality.
That said, I definitely wouldn’t recommend reading this book while eating. Many of the stories are gory, filled with unsettling moments like freak masturbation accidents, murder, cannibalism, and some of the darkest aspects of humanity.
