dark
Disgusting, but pure, classic Chuck Palahnuik, so worth reading. One of his better novels.

A new gernerations canturbury tales with some Vincent price house on haunted hill. A pilgrimage of authors, trying to tell their most extreme story. One of my top books I've read it on several occassions, and my first time through had to put it down several times during the story Guts, and then read it again before continuing with the book, possibly the best book to read on a summers day vacation next to a pool. That's where I was, and every time I pick it up I vividly remember my first time.

I’ve read other books by Palahniuk and thought they were really well written but this one missed the mark. It is gross and provocative and violent for no reason other than to be gross and provocative and violent. It is shocking in the same way The Human Centipede II and III were shocking. Over the top without real substance.

Every time I read this book, I forget exactly how it ends. I can remember many of the stories, and the names stir the memory of them as I read about their journey in the "writers' retreat." As usual, Chuck Palahniuk shows us our humanity, or lack thereof; he shows us people under unusual duress and gives us a glimpse into what we have potential to become.

I read this a few years ago and am re-reading it now. I really like Palahniuk because he is dark and sick, but not in a serious way. I read Invisible Monsters and really liked that too. Aaaaanyway, it's fun, and the short stories mixed in with the actual "story" of the characters is an interesting style.
