okay this was good fun, I really enjoy chuck palahniuk's flavour of satire.. although I do think it blew its load too early with guts.. everything else felt a little weak in comparison afterwards

Its so difficult to rate this book, there were some great parts and also pretty boring parts. I felt truley disgusted and conflicted reading this which I think is the mark of a decent horror book.
I love the idea of having short shories and poetry connected with an over aching narrative although the perspective changes were confusing and there were too many characters.
I think the point of the novel was about victim complexes where they are consciously making their suffering worse and trying to rationalise their own actions prior to and in the house. Im not great at complex thinking though.
I loved all the parts with Mrs. Clark, I think I would have enjoyed this book more if there was more short stories on fewer characters.

I gave it one star because some of the stories are interesting but overall the pacing is slow, the stories don’t flow that well together and/or don’t make sense. The main story is really confusing and it feels like he kept adding new characters randomly which had me like who is this, and why is their story important. The book reads as if it’s written by a yt man whose never truly had to experience suffering/struggle under the effects of capitalism, racism, homophobia/transphobia, and comes across almost as if the author gets off from thinking about/writing about the effects of these issues without actually critically thinking about the individual topics he writes about. Like horror shock bait or very gimmicky story-telling that’s obv more fantasy or how he sees things rather than lived experiences of actual folks who’ve gone through some of the experiences he writes about. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this book to someone, and the ending itself is abrupt and left me with even more questions than when I started. Overall the book was challenging and frustrating to finish, I’m more happy that I don’t have to read this book ever again rather than happy about finishing a good book (which in my opinion Haunted doesn’t fit that criteria).
