NOS4A2

Joe Hill

I didn't know the inability to write endings was genetic! If I ever meet Joe Hill I'll ask what possessed him to switch to passive voice in his last chapter and

Joe Hill has inherited a fine imagination for horror and suspense. NOS4A2 has been described as a "chase story", and, at a basic level, this is true - but what a chase! Though fairly lengthy, the novel doesn't spend too much of its time describing the history of its anagonist, Charles Talent Manx, instead, we simply witness his acts and the only explanation of his motives come from his own understanding of them. This makes Manx both mysterious and sinister - a combination that leaves the imagination to create some fairly chilling images.
I found this novel to be hard to explain to friends - even while I was recommending it to them. Dimension hopping bicycles, cars and motorcycles along with prophetic Scrabble tiles and a Christmas themed horror land can seem like a lot to pack into a single story. Hill is able to deftly bind it all together and top it with enough suspense to ensure that his place as one of the top horror novelists of our time is assured.

Great Book

This book was great. I started watching the TV Series and was telling my husband all about the differences. It is always great to have a picture of the people when you are reading the book.

A Christmas horror? Who knew that was a thing? And that it could be this chilling. Joe Hill delivers an atmospheric, eerie ride with characters that feel hauntingly real. The story is terrifying in the best way, and the ending hit surprisingly hard. Creepy, emotional, and beautifully written.

one of the most interesting books I have read in awhile.

The only reason this book took me this long to read was because of being extra busy. If I had more free time, I would’ve ripped through this way quicker.

This was my first Joe Hill read and I really enjoyed it.

vic mcqueen is badass as all get out; the image of her, her desperation, her rage, her love for her son all culminating in her rampage at the end pulling her through as she picks off devil child after devil child... that was one of the most unforgettable and enjoyable climaxes in a book i've read in so long. it's fucking amazing. it's the satisfaction of watching all those blockbuster revenge movies as they gun down foe after foe but it means something here because we were with vic from the very beginning. we see where her anger, her capacity for love, her sacrifice come from, and god does it feel good to care about a character and root for her because you know she deserves happiness and freedom and justice more than anything. i'm fine that she didn't make it to the end, but she absolutely deserved a better death scene, especially when it was building up so well. with that last action scene as good as it was, i did not need a last minute 'gotcha! she's still alive!' but i think having her actual death occur offscreen was a disservice.
