I see why so many people are praising this book! It is incredibly heavy and uncomfortable subject matter, but one quote really stuck out to me. After stealing a notebook that had incredibly racist songs in it written by a traveling minstrel group performing in blackface our main character says this:
"I thought about tearing out his songs and burning them, but they would still exist. Those crackers would still sing them. Better to know they exist. Don't you think?" (66%)
While difficult to read, this book reflects our American history, and it is important we acknowledge the slavery, racism, and oppression woven into our country's past (and in many ways present too). This book is well written and is a very strong example of literary fiction.

i physically could not put this book down. the writing was incredible. not many authors could walk such a fabulous knife’s edge between playfulness and suffering. having never read Huckleberry Finn i nonetheless feel like i know the story now; they seem to beautifully fill in the negative spaces of each other’s narratives. i would say more about all the things i loved in this book, but honestly i’d never do them justice, so just go read it.
