White Out

Ken Follett

3.39 AVERAGE

I took this book in my hands to give myself some off-time from an array of unfinished non-fiction. And, to that purpose, this did not disappoint me. I finished in one night.

A deadly virus (sorry, but the premise is not that threatening anymore, seeing that we are among one now) is in the hands of the villain. A 60 year old head, head of a biotech company, is in love with his 30 year old security head - and well, she is too. So, how does that love story pan out amidst this chaos of killer virus robbery? And how well does the Scotland winter weather help in it?

Grab this for an aeroplane ride or when you broke-up with that toxic bf of yours and want to hook up with another one - this will perhaps serve as an eye opener.

The back pages, touting that this is a page turner, did not lie. It was an easy book to read, and the pages really did turn quickly.

This is one of Follett's best novels. A terrific page-turner, its sets out with the dramatic premise of a lab containing a deadly virus and a plot to rob said lab.

The plot is immaculately structured. The pace never lags, and tension builds up until the crescendo of the action-packed showdown. The characters are well done, and thanks to all the action, there is less of Follett's sometimes cringe-worthy inner dialogue.

I've read better books by Follett, but if you're looking for a quick, fun thriller, this fits the bill!

I rarely review the books I read. But perhaps this will serve as a useful warning. Don't read this book. This is the kind of book that convinces people that they too can be a successful writer. For everything about this book is appalling. It has all the usual signs of a by the numbers thriller. But like cheap make up and disguise, the facade peels away quickly. This novel made me understand the true meaning of the words mediocre and amateur. A small plot stretched and prolonged through sheer ineptitude and pseudo professionalism. Maddening enough to cause one to write a grammatically weak review!

I gave this 4 because it kept me intrigued. I haven't read a book like this for a while, and suspense/mystery/intrigue books are one of my favorite genres. There was a LOT of language (F bombs) and other sexual innuendos but still a well thought out and well executed book. The characters were interesting, as was the setting. I never think of Scotland in winter, always green, so this was a change for me to try to picture in my mind. I kept forgetting and almost at first didn't realize it was in Scotland. I'm not sure what a boot lobby is (in a house, I know it's a trunk of a car) and there may have been a few other things like that, but I really did enjoy the book. The concept was meant to make you think about what would happen if something vicious like that were to be leashed upon the world and not stopped, and to be grateful for those people who's job it is to stop terrorists, as well as scientists to try to cure these things.

Actually 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨!
