This was my first Ken Follett and sadly I was a little disappointed with it! I went into this expecting the story to focus on the outbreak of a deadly virus but instead this book heads a bit of a different direction and is more of a heist and home invasion story. Also, there were many moments I found myself rolling my eyes or had a hard time believing, such as the sexual tension between various characters. I may or may not try more Ken Follett, I've not quite decided.
adventurous mysterious tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

This was a good thriller. The characters were interesting and the story had a lot of twists that I didn't expect. I thought it was a bit slow at first and there were a lot of character introductions, but by the end I didn't mind because the characters were all clearly developed and interesting.

From bestselling author Ken Follett (Pillars of the Earth) comes Whiteout, an engrossing and nerve wracking thriller. Christmas Eve in Scotland, a lab technician is discovered bleeding from his eyes; the signs point to Madoba-2, a lethal virus. As a blizzard surrounds a medical research firm that is in the process of being robbed, Toni Gallo, head of security for Oxenford Medical, is alarmed when the deadly virus is in danger of being released into the general public. As the storm worsens, Toni, along with several others trapped in the storm, all deal with the stress of the stolen virus in a house of lies, betrayal, love and lust. In this densely written thriller, Follett carefully measures his story, weaving detailed characters and relationships in a dark, foreboding atmosphere. In a well-informed and thoughtful style, Follett delivers a novel that fans of thrillers/suspense will easily enjoy.

KC Rating: 3/5

The suspense build was great. It had a normal start but last few chapters were epic !

This book was a big disappointment to me. At first I thought it could be just as good as the "third twin" since it is a criminal story related with biology. I couldn't be more wrong.

1. The writing is poor to the point of being full of sentences that could have been written by any 11 years old kid

2. Little scientific research - mainly based in explaining that labs which study dangerous viruses have high security measures (which is pretty obvious to anyone)

3. No character development. Everyone is the same from the beginning to the end and even Kit doesn't seem to have "learned the lesson"

4. WTF gaps that no one understands. Why the hell Frank was such a bitch? Who was the scientist who died? How did he really feel? And did he get sick doing his work or after taking the rabbit?

5. Non sense characters with erratic behaviours - yes Toni's mother could have some dementia already but come on!

6. Nice love story ruined. Too fast, without any purpose whatsoever.

However the poor descriptions and the easy-going dialogue makes it easy to read since the story is interesting, so I guess that's the positive side of it.
