Am Ende wirklich unnötig in die Länge gezogen. Verstehe auch nicht was es zur Story beitragen soll, dass die 38 jährige Protagonistin auf ihren 20+ Jahre älteren Chef steht

I thought I would give this book a shot because of how much I loved Ken Follett's Kingsbridge series. What reading this book has taught me, is that I love Ken Follett for one reason above all else, his ability to write Historical Fiction. This book is not a work of Historical Fiction, so, I did not really like it all that much.

This book has a lot of Ken Follett's style in it. There are a lot of dynamic relationships and high stakes drama. There is a overlying tension that runs throughout the entire book. But again, it is missing that historical background that I loved the read about. What made his books so wonderful was that I felt I was learning about Medieval society while I was reading them. They were entertaining and educating at the same time. Since this book takes place in modern times, I didn't feel like I learned anything about the society these people lived in. The book felt hollow.

I will also add what several other reviewers wrote, I found the relationship between Toni and her much older boss to be a little creepy. It was a little gross and felt very uncomfortable for multiple reasons. I'm not trying to shame anyone in a similar relationship, but a relationship between a MUCH older man and a younger woman or simply a relationship between a Boss and Employee, just has this power dynamic that bothers me. I can't explain it more than that. It felt like an odd choice.

Overall this book is not BAD per se, it just isn't enough like the other books by Follett to make me love it. It felt hollow, empty, and a small imitation of what his previous books managed to accomplish.

Read this in one day, it was very fast-paced and I was on the edge of my seat during the finale. Some of the characters were well-written, so I cared about a few of them and I really loved the idea of children playing a big role in an 'adult scenario'.
However, the way Follett writes female characters is so typical of male writers - every woman is described as attractive, with great boobs (always an important detail), voluminous hair and perfect makeup after 48 hours of work (literally) and with no character flaws whatsoever. There is even that typical scene of her standing naked in front of a mirror and judging her good looks, as we've all read in a million other books.
In the end, I had a good time reading this even though sometimes I was annoyed by all the stereotypical tropes like annoying exes, student-teacher relationships, family feuds, very convenient friendships and the all time present male gaze.
dark informative mysterious tense slow-paced

This is a very fast paced book that I really enjoyed and will keep you hooked til the last page.
