"Sometimes the dead are luckier."
First five-star read of the year, and I’m so glad it was this book.
The Kite Runner left me heartbroken. It made me feel guilty for being born in a place and time where I’m not subjected to the horrors of an oppressive regime - and made me want to do something about it. I would say that this book awoke something in me.
"I'm so dirty and full of sin."
Let’s talk about the writing. It’s beautiful. Not overly simple and not too complicated. Just right. You can feel the time and care put into every sentence. The dialogue is strong, and the narration is perfect. It flows naturally and paints clear scenes.
"It always hurts more to have and lose than to not have in the first place."
And, last but not least, Amir, the main character. I genuinely didn’t know if I liked him. And honestly, that’s part of what I loved about the book. I can’t forgive Amir for what he did, but I respect that he knew it was wrong and tried to do better.
This was a beautiful, devastating, powerful book.

The book excellently depicts the realities of Afganistan and the consequences that lies and betrayal can have. It has a melancholic tone, however in the end it has a satisfactory ending.
Although it has a melancholic tone it also captures the good in certain events.

an emotional, impactful read - the story hits hard, and there were several twists I did not anticipate. I learned a lot about the history and culture of Afghanistan. there is immense suffering in this book, and there is love, forgiveness, compassion, community, and growth. for you a thousand times over 🥲
This was good, but I definitely liked A Thousand Splendid Suns more.
