Enjoyable and laugh-out-loud kind of funny, This Time Next Year was a sweet surprise as I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The dialogue was great and I really enjoyed how Minnie decided to practice some self love towards the end. It was also great to see a man with issues actually acknowledging them and going to therapy to resolve them

Please note that I read this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review.
I found this book to be delightful and was engaged throughout my reading. I loved how Minnie and Quinn came to be part of each other's lives (the story of their births was great) and how they seemed to constantly be in a loop around each other growing up. Though I gave this 5 stars, I have to say that I think that there was a missed opportunity to explore Quinn more. I think the book focused mainly on Minnie. I wish towards the end that Cousens had shown us Quinn's POV so we could see how he was handling things on his end. His storyline was tragic in so many ways and I felt for the character a lot.
"This Time Next Year" follows Minnie Cooper (yes that is her name) and Quinn Hamilton. Both are born on the same day (New Year's Day) but have had different life trajectories. Minnie is trying to run a successful pie business with her best friend. She knows though that the business is barely hanging on and doesn't know what she will do if she fails at one more thing. Going out to celebrate New Year's Eve with her boyfriend causes Minnie's "birthday curse" to strike again and she finds herself locked in a bathroom all night. The next morning she is let out by Quinn Hamilton who she realizes is the guy that according to her mother stole her name. The book jumps back and forth between the present with Minnie getting to know Quinn and also we get to see past New Year's Eve/Days with the two of them throughout the years.
I did like Minnie and felt for her. This book realistically looks at how hard it is to set up a business. We get to see though how Minnie has not done well in the past which definitely sets up why she seems to walk around with a chip on her shoulder. Quinn though rich also has his own share of problems too. You initially think he's just a spoiled rich guy until Cousens gives you more of his backstory. I do like the fact that the two characters in essence circle each other and then start to become something more. I also get why Quinn is hesistant.
The secondary characters were great in this one. The two mothers definitely shaped up the story a lot and you get to see why Quinn's mother still thinks about Minnie's mother. Minne's best friend was great though and I thought that Cousens did a very good job of handling the evolving friendship and changes that they both needed to make.
The writing was really good. I had a handle on who was "speaking" and the time periods. The flow worked too. It was a bit clunky at first, but once you get going in the book everything makes sense and the different chapters and POVs flow into each other.
The book takes place in the UK, India, and I forget where else over the course of about 30 plus years. We get to see Tara and Quinn's birth and the different things that have happened to them as children, pre-teens, teens, and then adults.
As I already said, I wish that Cousens had showed us more of Quinn towards the end. The ending was lovely though and I would love to read another book by Cousens in the future.

This is a cute, New Years themed Rom Com. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light, quick read.
✨3 Stars✨ This adorable book is perfect to read during the time in between Christmas and New Years. (Very minor spoilers ahead, but not enough to hide the review.)
Minnie and Quinn have coincidentally crossed paths just about every New Year’s — even being born in the same hospital On New Years, just minutes apart. Luck has always seemed to favor Quinn, while Minnie experiences some sort of misfortune every NYE, her least favorite time of year. Is 2020 finally the year they fall in love?
I liked that it seemed to capture realistic quirky characters, rather than fairytales. The interactions between Minnie and Quinn were genuine rather than sounding like a scripted romantic movie. Leila and Ian were an adorably realistic couple as well.
A couple strange things that I didn’t love:
- Greg: As a whole I did not like this character, but specifically that he was an ass when Minnie broke up with him and the author tried to redeem his character. His need to control the breakup (or not breakup) had me waving red flags! Also, his Jennifer Aniston obsession was weird.... very weird.
- Leila/Ian proposal: This didn’t bother me, it was just so weird and took up an unnecessary amount of space in this book!
- Similarly, Minnie’s father and his clock obsession. It just took up too much of the story and made it busier than it needed to be.
Ultimately, I thought it was a fun, romantic read that I enjoyed. I certainly think it’s worth picking up! This book reminds me of the song Invisible String by Taylor Swift

It’s interesting because I get why this book got some bad reviews. It is nothing like I expected, it’s actually so much better.
I thought it would be a fluffy rom-com but it was so deep. It was funny, but also sad and hopeful. Definitely not a steamy romance, but still a beautiful little love story.
The premise is obviously very fantastical and not practical, as are the characters… but I found this helped to lighten a book with a lot of heavy themes.
I loved the love story between the two best friends: Minnie and Leila, and all the side characters too.
The parents had so much depth in this book, and really drove home that you just can never know what someone’s home life is like… no one has a perfect family, and sometimes you think you’d be better off with someone else’s, but meanwhile they’re thinking the same thing about you….
Anyways - if you’re expecting a fluffy or steamy romance, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for a good comedy with some really great (although somewhat sad) plot lines and characters, I think you’ll love this book

This adorable story begins with Minnie telling us how she has the worst of luck when it’s her birthday.
From the day she was born she has had terrible luck her birthday and in the hours leading up to her birthday.
The particular New Year’s eve/day this story begins with, it’s a little bit different.
Not different in the sense of her luck (she still has a very unlucky night), but different because she gets to meet the one person who apparently took her luck.
Minnie was the second baby born at her hospital the night/day she was born. She was born right after this baby named Quinn.
The story of their birth is kind of cute, but weird at the same time.
Minnie’s mom has always told her, her name was meant to be Quinn.
But the day she was born another lady at the hospital was freaking out about giving birth at the same time as her mom was giving birth and after her mother tried to help her calm down talking to her and telling her that Quinn was the name she was planning to use for her, she took Minnie’s name for her baby, forcing her mother to find a new name and apparently that was enough to cause Minnie’s bad luck.
Fast forward to modern day she goes to this party with her boyfriend and gets locked inside the bathroom of the venue. Not only that, but at the end of the night her boyfriend leaves and she is left there only to be found by none other than Quinn in the early hours of the next day.
The person who’s birthday she and her boyfriend came to celebrate, the person who allegedly stole her name and luck the moment he was born. That Quinn.
She figures out pretty quickly that this Quinn is the Quinn she has resented all her life. So she is left with this feeling of resentment and attraction after meeting him.
Worst of all, life seems to want them to get to know each other so he sort of plays knight in shining armor after her boyfriend refuses to help her out when she needs his help right after she meets Quinn.
Through out the book we get little glimpses of their life. Like when Minnie got dragged to a party and she kissed a random guy and when Quinn was on vacation with a girlfriend who thought he was going to proposed, but he wasn’t ready for that.
We see a friendship develop into something more and how their own life experiences and struggles prevents them from letting go and explore the relationship they began building the moment they met.
There are so many moments when they meet or almost meet in the past and once you get to the end and figure out why the title of this book is This Time Next Year.
For me this is a very cute and realistic read!
I know contemporary is supposed to be “realistic,” but let’s be honest how many times is a romance read really believable?
I really enjoyed the way Cousens wrote a story where the characters had real issues and feelings with very realistic and complicated problems any of us could face at some point in our life.
There was the whole “meant for each other” factor which is the one unrealistic bit of the story, but it was perfectly written so I didn’t really mind it.
If you are looking for something to read that is not super dramatic or need a break from fantasy, This Time Next Year is the perfect read. It’s quick, realistic, uncomplicated and full of hope for those of us that are hopeless romantics.

Cute, quirky, awfully coincidental, predictable. Still a fun, light read.
I picked this book up because it was advertised as a "Slow burn." If this is a slow burn I guess I am not a fan. Our lead is quickly in love with the main love interest.
In the beginning, I was happy with him and the slow burn.
Quinn is not emotionally available for a relationship and despite his clear boundaries on the issue, Minnie continues to put herself in the position to be hurt.
Her friends, and random Cla(i)res tell her the best advice in the book, and she does not listen yet again.
She finally is like I deserve the best and gets her life together then this miserable man is like "I am ready for you" Great for you Quinn but our girl deserves to be the first choice.
"If I don't get to Westminster pier in 40 minutes, I am going to miss proving to the man that I love that I have changed." Minnie! I love your growth but Quinn needed to prove the growth to you!
At the end of the book, Minnie is going through the worst turn of events to "prove her love".
All that for that awful dude to come to her house anyways!
This book was not my favorite.

This is unfortunately a no for me. I didn’t like Quinn or Minnie and they had zero chemistry so really hard to care about their story. Then they were both in relationships for a large portion of the of the book which I always hate. Finally the worst offense for me is Minnie’s whole ‘woe is me’ attitude. It’s such an unappealing character trait. Wr are told and shown how ‘unlucky’ Minnie is. Repeatedly. Like how many things can happen to one person? If I’m Minnie I’m just giving up at life, since I can’t go or do anything at any time without something bad happening to me. Like goodbye cruel world. I’m out. Also of course you’re unsuccessful Minnie, your business idea is terrible.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book was that it ended!! I wanted to see where this “risk” would take Minnie Cooper and Quinn Hamilton. I so so enjoyed this book, I laughed out loud so many times and had all of the ‘awweeee’ moments. This one is definitely a new favorite. This book is told from multiple perspectives (past and present) and everything came together so lovely. I definitely see myself reading this again very soon, it gave me all the good vibes. If you liked ‘One Day in December’, you’ll definitely enjoy this one! I seriously would have loved an epilogue though, maybe a sequel? I felt like the love story was just getting started at the end of the book
