This Time Next Year

It’s 1989 and there’s a huge monetary prize for the first baby born in 1990. Minnie was born unlucky, as her mom often says. Not only was she born one minute too late to claim the prize money, the woman her mom helped through labor (while also in labor) won AND stole Minnie’s to be name -Quinn. “This wouldn’t happen to a Quinn Cooper”

Was this a bit trope-y and full of cliches? Yes. But it wasn’t too cringy.

I liked the flow throughout the year and how much all of the characters grew. While the change in both mothers was a little dramatic Quinn and Minnie’s transformation seemed evenly paced.

Gregory was a snide asshole and that storyline tied up a little too nicely for me. Some people are amicable with their exes, but I have yet to meet these people.

Leila was cool but I honestly don’t know how she planned an entire wedding in a few months. Their fight at their shop was completely out of character for Leila though.

What I really liked is how Minnie and Quinn’s lives seemed to be intertwined. In the flashbacks they always seem to just miss each other. I can’t confirm but I feel like “fangirl90” that Quinn was chatting with online was Minnie. I loved how Leila referee to them as love twins.

This was a cute quick read if that’s what you’re looking for.

3.5⭐ rounded up. Similar to my husband and I, the two main characters had many an opportunity to meet before actually doing so, but all the jumping around was not the way I would have told this story. Love, love, loved the sub-characters and side storylines and the spin on friends to lovers story.

Very cheesy and all wrapped up in a bow and it would normally annoy me - but as a summertime read when I need a distraction from heavier things, I loved every bit

Is there any better way to start the new year than with love? I don't think there is. I loved the flashback memory moments sparkling throughout this story, and happy endings that turn into new beginnings. Lovely way to start a new year.

I absolutely loved this book! It gave me very cosy winter vibes. Even though the story's centering around new years eve it gives off festive vibes! It was a very easy read and the characters were written extremely well. For me there was just enough development in the characters without seeing them completely change into a different person at the end of the story. It was lighthearted and lovely with enough romance but also with some comedy and drama involved.

Short summary:

This book is about a woman named Minnie and a man named Quinn. Since Minnie was born, she has always had the worst luck on her birthday (January first). Why? Because Quinn has stolen her name and all the luck that would've be going with it. Every year on her birthday some pretty unfortnunate events unravel and because of that, she hates her birthday. But on her thirtieth birthday she finally meets the one she's sharing her birthday with and has always thought of as her worst enemy.. Quinn! This story is about a woman with a difficult unlucky upbringing and a rich man with, which seems to be an easy upbringing at first glance.
As we dive further into this book, more and more from Quinns past come to light and Minnie finally starts to recognise that she is just as worthy of a person as everyone else.
The book is written in third person and shifts between the present and past new years eves.

Cute overall, yet predictable. I appreciated the growth Minnie went through in the course of the year. The timeline jumping was at times a bit confusing, especially when you had to consider how close Minnie and Quinn came to meeting time and time again. It may have been better to have the “missed connections” appear in the story a bit closer together.

This Time Next Year is another excellent holiday read. I read it on NYE and it was perfect. I'm a huge believer in fate / serendipity / kismet so I really enjoyed this book.

The book is a slow burn - the plot is interesting but it did not evoke an emotion from me like I thought it would. However, I found it to be sweet and tender. I loved reading about all the missed encounters Minnie and Quinn had on every New Year's Eve and how they were truly fated to be together.

I would rate this a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
