This Time Next Year is another excellent holiday read. I read it on NYE and it was perfect. I'm a huge believer in fate / serendipity / kismet so I really enjoyed this book.
The book is a slow burn - the plot is interesting but it did not evoke an emotion from me like I thought it would. However, I found it to be sweet and tender. I loved reading about all the missed encounters Minnie and Quinn had on every New Year's Eve and how they were truly fated to be together.
I would rate this a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

I did enjoy some aspects of this book. I definitely loved when everything came full circle and also the character development.
I didn’t love how Minnie’s fear of bad luck just came off as pessimistic sometimes.
Overall, I liked it and it got me in the mood for NYE for sure!

This was a cute premise but fell flat for me. I understand why Quinn had his issues and I’m glad he worked through them in a healthy way, we just didn’t get to see that on the page so I wasn’t very invested in their relationship. To me, he was still this turd playing hot and cold with Minnie. He should’ve been the one racing through London, experiencing some of her bad luck in order to profess his love.
All that said, my biggest issue with the book was that it desperately needed a sensitivity reader. There was so much fatphobia for a book that’s only a couple years old. It was really disappointing.

Moderate: Body shaming, Fatphobia, Panic attacks/disorders
This is cute, because I liked the two main characters and the pie people. But I HATED the moms. How do you consistently tell your daughter her whole life that she’s not enough and unlucky because she was the 2nd baby born in a hospital on New Years? Like, what? What horrible patenting. I was furious. 1 star removed for that unbelievable trash. But overall, I loved the love story.
An often poignant and ultimately uplifting romance

cw: severe anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, child abandonment, miscarriage, bullying
Quinn Hamilton and Minnie Cooper were born a minute apart in the same hospital on New Year's Eve, but their worlds couldn't be any more different. Thirty years later, they find themselves in the same place at the same time. Is fate bringing them together for a reason?
This was exactly the sort of story I adore. I love a good soulmate story, and Minnie and Quinn's story was beautifully interwoven. I'm mindful that this isn't a new release, but for anyone who hasn't read it, I'll try not to spoil any of the details, other than to say I loved all of the little interactions and near misses over the years. I particularly appreciated the message about superstitions and making your own luck. While the main focus was obviously on Quinn and Minnie, I enjoyed the development of their respective mothers' behaviours and the acknowledgement that we're all flawed. There were some incredibly moving parts. Quinn's eleventh birthday broke my heart, and I really felt for Minnie when she thought back to being bullied.
There were also plenty of lighter moments. I loved the easy banter between Quinn and Minnie. And there were some wonderfully quirky supporting characters. I loved the entire group from No Hard Fillings, both staff and patrons. Bev's existential crisis was relatable, and Minnie's plastic bottle gift was hilarious, if ill-conceived. I kind of LOVED Leila for calling Minnie out on her fatalistic attitude, even though it resulted in them falling out for a while. And her proposal was epically adorable. But ultimately I think what I loved most was that both main characters didn't just pretend their flaws didn't exist, instead, they worked on themselves, which only made the ending much more satisfying (the - literal - journey at the end was absolutely rom-com movie-worthy).
An often poignant and ultimately uplifting romance.

This was not the book I wanted it to be. Everyone was juvenile. It was a little boring. I caught myself falling asleep a few times while reading it. Their relationship didn’t do anything for me. They didn’t have really much chemistry and there was a lack of passion.

A cute, quick read with a unique enemies to lovers dynamic.
I thought Quinn's story was more interesting, but cute romance. A little slow in parts. Fun to read on New Year's Eve
5 Stars!
Minnie Cooper (lol) has never lived a life filled with luck. In fact, she was often more unlucky than not. Her bad luck has always been attributed to what I'm calling, "quinn syndrome." Ever since her first breath, Minnie has attracted bad luck. From losing out on money, to jobs, and even friends... But her life starts to slowly turn around for the better when she meets her "love-twin."
This book deserves all the stars and more! I found myself literally laughing out loud... Yes out loud! The situations poor minnie finds herself in are both heart-wrenching and hilarious. Though I can't relate to Minnie's misfortune, this was a hilarious read and I was left wanting more.
"This Time Next Year" is a book that I would recommend to all of my friends looking for an entertaining and happy read. I've had a bad streak of books so far in 2021, and this book has pulled me right out of my slump!
Even better, some of Minnie's famous pie recipes are tucked away in the back. I am making the Steak Gyllenhaal next weekend and I am so excited. So do yourself a favor and read this book, lend it to your friend, and make one of Minnie's pies.
