The first half of Thirst is dripping in blood drenched sensuality and never has a book made me want to be a vampire more than this one did! It’s hauntingly historic, beautifully gothic and full of female empowerment. Usually this is the type of tale I would not enjoy but the authors gorgeous yet at times horrific prose drew me in and devoured every last inch of me until I was fully immersed, stumbling down the path of sex and destruction with one of our main characters.

Then I was dragged, kicking and screaming from my silk lined coffin into the second part of the book and dumped instead into hessian sack. Whereas the first half was fuelled by greed and lust, this seemed like such a harsh contrast - infused with sadness and desperation it lacked the same power and strength and while this was clearly a deliberate choice, the change was a shock to the system. It really felt as though these they were two different stories from two different authors. Although this demonstrates versatility and the ability to adapt writing to tell a character’s story (each part absolutely works on its own merit) I struggled with the transition and each half did not quite come together to make a whole for me. Regardless, I will definitely pick up something else by this author. Just because I didn’t take a bite of the cake doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate all the ingredients on their own

this book was filled with beautiful and haunting prose and i am in complete awe of this translation. filled with themes of womanhood, motherhood, and religion, marina yuszczuk’s brilliance really shines when she incorporates them all together with vampirism and mortality.

4.5 for me because i’m still unsure about the ending
