I have a mixed opinion of this story as it being the final chapter of Harry's story in Rowling's wizarding world. Throughout reading, I reminded myself that I was reading a script and some things that seemed too fantastical or odd probably played out on stage crystal clear - which made it fun to let my imagination try to picture just how it may look. My favorite parts of the story, no spoilers, were the characters and character dynamics. Seeing the older versions of some of our most beloved characters and FINALLY seeing how the Second Wizarding War wore down and changed them (rather than the picturesque ended we received in the original saga) was a breath of fresh air and humanized several characters - one in particular. While I DID indeed enjoy this and would read again when I once again revisit the world of Harry Potter on the page, I do have a hard time stomaching (some to the point of having quite a terrible stomach ache) a few things as being canon. But the characters make it all worth while and seeing the next generation in action is really exciting and enjoyable.
adventurous slow-paced

The feeling that you get after reading this book is the same when you see your favorite sportsperson playing a charity event after retirement.

You know its just not the thing but still enjoy it.

Decent plot, not a novel just transcripts of the play

ok but the fact jk rowling wrote it breaks my heart

It actually hurts to give a Harry Potter title less than 5 stars. The only reason this got 3 stars instead of 2 was because of how much I enjoyed Scorpius :)

The premise for the story itself is interesting, but I don't think it was executed in a very 'Rowling-esque' way. I felt the characters themselves weren't speaking/acting how they would have in the original series, and that kept me from fully reconnecting with them.

My biggest pet peeve for this story was how they portrayed Harry. I was finding myself NOT LIKING HIM. How in the world can that even happen?

I don't know, I guess I'm just pretty underwhelmed after all the hype. At least I still have the originals to curl up with, which is exactly what I'm going to do to get the taste of The Cursed Child out of my mouth.

Meh. I would give it 2.5 stars, but it doesn't deserve 3. Plays aren't really meant to be read in general, but my 13 yo said it best--it reads like fanfic.

While I love watching plays, I've always found reading them slow-going. Not so with 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'. The story races on at a fast pace, and the characterisations are spot on. Harry Potter and The Flash share some similarities. Both stories start with the heroes parents murdered by their arch-nemesis. And 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' and the season finale of season 2 of The Flash, and season 3, deal with a similar 'Flashpoint' storyline. Once you've read/seen both, you'll get what I mean. But all you need to know is that 'The Cursed Child' is on par with the other Harry Potter books.

DID NOT FINISH

The pre-existing characters seemed very out of character

The first thing that struck me was that this did not at all feel like a continuation of the Harry Potter series and it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that this book is script and not prose. That being said, I don't hate it but I also don't love it. I read it obsessively but it never had that Harry Potter feel to it. I'm not even sure what star rating I should give it.

Spoiler Things I liked
•The relationship between Draco and Scorpius. I was so glad to see there was some affection between them.
•Some resolution between Harry and Dumbledore even though it was postmortem.
•I like that Albus ends up in Slytherin and struggles with his own identity due to his father's legacy.

Things I didn't like
•Like most people, I felt like too many of the scenarios were fanfic-esque. None of this had the well thought out writing that is typical of a Harry Potter story. It really disappointed me.
•Way too many characters were out of character and for me this applies especially to Harry. Somehow this just doesn't seem like him? None of the older characters acted like they seemed like they would as adults.
•They were so many characters introduced in the Deathly Hallows epilogue that were given little to no attention. Many of the characters from the series have no appearance at all. It didn't seem right considering what a huge cast the books had.

I can't say I'll ever accept this as an official continuation of the series even if it is considered canon. It just doesn't fit. I'm still interested in seeing how the script plays out in an actual performance but that's about it. I can't say I am too disappointed because I didn't go into this with high or many expectations so in the end I wasn't really surprised by how it turned out.

This was wild. I don't want to give anything away, #KeepTheSecrets and all that, but I will say this: Scorpius Malfoy it a fucking gift.
