Can a marriage become broken so gradually and quietly that no one really notices? Perhaps you could say that's what happened to Eve and Eric's marriage, but maybe "broken" isn't quite the right word. Faded? Disintegrated? Whatever label you give it, something is obviously wrong when Eric makes a spontaneous decision to just leave one night when he takes the babysitter home. It's not as simple as an affair with her, but she does act as the catalyst for his decision. I found this novel painful to read at times, partly because some observations or reflections on marriage hit close to home, and at other times because I just couldn't believe that a wife would respond to the situation the way in which Eve does. This marriage and family drama makes for a compelling read, though you may find yourself squirming a bit as you go along.

I guess I can't really call this book "read" as much as "abandoned". I got about 100 pages in and could not find any appeal in the main character (and can't even remember her name). She seemed cold and her reaction to her husband's running off struck me as odd. The whole nutritionist storyline was awkward and strange and I had no idea why the author would go into such detail when the plot of the story has to do with her relationship with her husband. Unless it was a binging client who ate her husband, then I get the point. I just didn't like anything I read in those first 100 pages so I tossed it aside and moved on.

It was ok. I thought it was weird that the author spent so much time giving us facts about nutrition and depression. And I just didn't buy the fact that the main character accepted the husband back with so little discussion or questions. One of the main reasons the couple was having problems was a lack of communication, and then they barely even discuss what went wrong.

I really didn't like either one of the main characters that much, but I did enjoy the story. Will probably pick up something else by her at some point. I did like Keisha & Michael a lot & those story lines.

The author has strong opinions about obesity, modern technology, feminism and men being helpless and she lectures the reader on her beliefs every chance she gets. If I want to know the details of gastric bypass surgery or that BMI of 30 means one is obese I'll read a non-fiction book about it.
The FICTIONAL part of the story was painful to read. I didn't like any of the characters and didn't care by the end how anything turned out. Many of the characters' actions seemed unbelievable - what mother would drop her 14-year-old daughter off on a street corner to hang out with adult men? Or not call the police when her husband left unexpectedly? The 8-year-old son goes to bed in his underwear because "Mom, you didn't put me in my pajamas!"?

I wanted to like this more than I did. It was good, but there was some dialogue and certain situations that seemed too unrealistic. It was good, but not great.

Another purely subjective two-star book. Not badly written, just dull and predictable. I fully accept that it says everything about me that I couldn't summon empathy or interest in these average people and their difficulties. Guess I need more sturm und drang, or less bland revelations that yes, maybe you are depressed, or wow, I guess marriage is difficult. Hurrumph.
Beautiful cover art, though.
(EDIT: Re-reading this review, I'm wondering what kind of black mood I was in yesterday. Oy. "Average people?" I'm embarrassed for myself.)
