This book really does deserve all the hype and praise it gets, because I was absolutely hooked from the start. It is the kind of book that presents you with a very interesting premise, in this case a Marilyn Monroe-level famous old Hollywood star and the story of her life and her seven husbands, and then carries you along years of her choices and actions that shaped who she is and how she becomes the celebrity she is in the current time of 2017, and each step of the way you are so interested you just want to blaze through all the pages and know what happens next, somehow without ever feeling the story is dragging on or having forgettable filler. Evelyn Hugo is one of the most fleshed out fictional characters I have ever read about and it made me so happy to see a well-written and well-thought out
bisexual poc
woman who is confident, headstrong, shameless, flawed, conniving, soft-hearted, and so much more. On top of this I have never seen a
plot twist in the last 90% of the book
pulled off so well and feel purposeful and meaningful to the story rather than a last ditch plot effort for shock value. This book had beautiful representation, a healthy mix of characters you'd root for and ones you'd despise, wittiness, charm, and sharp life advice from Evelyn Hugo herself. It was an absolute treat to read.

It’s a very well written book and I do genuinely recommend it with all my heart. However, it is not void of flaws. I strongly recommend seeking out some opinions from POC (especially Latinx and Black POC) about this book and how it talks about race before reading it.

i wish i could give this book more than 5 stars. it moved me. it made me laugh. it made me cry. it will stick with me forever. as a bisexual woman, it made me feel seen and known to know that evelyn was so adamant about being known as bisexual and not lesbian. she is two halves. not just one. i loved this book so so much. highly highly recommend.
