“Do you think I'm a whore?” Harry pulled over to the side of the road and turned to me. “I think you're brilliant. I think you're tough. And I think the word whore is something ignorant people throw around when they have nothing else” “We're all whores, really, in some way or another. At least in Hollywood.” … “But I like you this way. I like you impure and scrappy and formidable. I like the Evelyn Hugo who sees the world for what it is and then goes out there and wrestles what she wants out of it. So, you know, put whatever label you want on it, just don't change. That would be the real tragedy” This book reminded me why I love reading and definitely a story I will think about fondly. This is the art of storytelling and I adore Taylor Jenkins Reid’s ability to create such a morally gray character who at times you hate and then wish everything and more for them. Evelyn Hugo as a character is exceptional and truly sheds the light on human complexity and growth I loved as we got more into her past Evelyn would then talk about in the present her regrets and what she has learned from them and the growth and internal combat with Evelyn was portrayed so realistically There was not one moment in this book that I was not captivated by. The pacing was perfect, reveals were placed suddenly and shockingly and had so much emotional depth. The amount of profound lines in this book makes me squeal. All I can say is Harry and Evelyn were the standouts for me in this book and I adore their bond and soulmate connection so much That being said, this is a new favorite but some points I would like to point out TW: MENTION IF SUICIDE AHEAD/SPOILERS Sometimes it felt when we were transitioning into Monique’s POV I felt so disconnected from her part in the story, once you finish you will understand it and she is a vital character for all the events moving the novel forward, but her part in the story merely felt used as a way for Evelyn’s emotional healing rather than her being her own character. The ending I have mixed thoughts I understand Evelyn’s decision and felt her anguish as we learned all she lost and had gone through, but in my humble opinion I hated how the book literally glamorized suicide. Why does no one talk about how hours before Evelyn decides to take her own life she is literally doing a photo shoot, Monique knowing what she knows and just being okay with it. In no way I am saying that it was Monique’s responsibility and burden alone to carry and even if she had gone back to try to stop Evelyn does not mean she still would not have done it. But I feel like the way it was stated especially this line. “Evelyn was never going to let the thing that made her be the thing to destroy her. She was never going to let anything, even a part of her body have that sort of power This gave very inspirational energy to me and suicide is anything but that, it’s shocking, horrifying, and ultimately in no way should be so easily seen as a a “grand ending” and it’s not about having the will to make a decision. Evelyn Hugo’s decision was not selfish, but the burden to Monique to carry that truth was This is a story that deserves praise, but also criticism and even with this I still loved the book and think it is a great story that deserves the hype TW: Child/Adult Marriage, Death, Mentions of Suicide, Biphobia, Racism, Physical Abuse and Emotional Abuse, Toxic Relationship, Sexual Harassment, Alcohol, Griefrebeccaxpaige's review against another edition
