Eerie and complex. I have a feeling unsettlong bits will stick with me a while.
The intricate web of characters is somehow enriching, I expected it to be distracting.
Thank goodness I did hardback, audio seems like it could be a nightmare to keep up with..

I loved A Visit from the Goon Squad in 2010 but tbh didn’t remember it extremely well. It was cool to read this and connect the dots/remember some of the threads from the previous book. I think I connected with this tech plot devices (an endless digital repository of all human memories that you have to opt into) more than other tech dystopia plot devices in the past few years. The book riffs on a now old idea—“social media users are not using the product; they are the product—but doesn’t really present it as a problem to overcome. It’s just accepted that the world works that way now and the stories use that idea as a backdrop to tackle language, connection, memory, death, and lots of topics surrounding performance/music (which particularly hit home with me)
The Candy House imagines an internet-like technology where one’s memories, one’s consciousness, can be shared and how each character (in a string of related narratives) either engages or disrupts the system as they struggle to maintain authenticity, purpose, relevance, and relationships.
I just didn’t like this one as much as I had hoped. Each chapter is a different character’s story. Futuristic tech fiction.
The story did not reel me in even with the interesting set up of seeing/witnessing the story from another character. The audio version is well performed.
The first non-repeat read of the year. A terrific novel and satisfying follow-up to Visit from the Goon Squad I imbibed the audiobook, which is well-read by a full cast of voice actors. I particularly enjoyed the way in which Egan integrates domestic drama with science fiction.

Loved it until the end. I feel like everything was tied a little too nicely with everyone realizing they were connected through someone, but a beautiful book about interconnectedness.
