my rage is incomprehensible. i can’t even put into words the bone chilling dread and disgust. at every fucking turn anna was ignored, prodded, beaten down, cast aside, tormented for being the thing that would save them all.

2.5* & I really debated whether to give this 2 or 3. I honestly enjoyed the lengthy authors note at the end more than the actual book. The first 75% was honestly pretty slow and boring and then only ramps up at the end. I definitely would not call this a thriller or a horror, but more of a slow burn mystery with elements of horror and mythological native elements that I found intriguing - it was probably the only reason I did decide to round up to 3 stars. This is a fictional book, but the #MMIW movement is important & everyone should learn more about it by doing further education.

It was a compelling book shedding light on real topics

4.5

The main character, Anna, wasn't very likeable. Anna whined about growing apart from Grace because she was lonely and friendless, yet simultaneously shoved Alee away who was just trying to be friends. I also didn't feel a pull to the mystery. It is obvious from the initial interaction which character did it, and the reveal of the specific details was boring. No real twists or turns, and very limited character growth for anybody.

It was okay, but I'm not going to recommend it to others.

I really wish we could do 1/2 stars. This is a 3.5 for me. It was entertaining, I liked the characters, and the pacing was well done. I'll read more from Medina at some point I'm sure, but I'm not moving his stuff up my TBR.
