The fact that this is a debut is astounding! It’s beautifully written especially considering how seamlessly it jumps between timelines. Loved how it ties tribal tales into the story and the parallels there. This one got me at the end and def had me tearing up. My only complaint is I did get a little bored at times, but overall an amazing read!!
I think my favorite thing about this book is that examples of traditional indigenous stories are woven into it. The story was just mysterious enough to keep my full attention. There are some nods to drug use but it seems like it was largely a red herring that never got fully explained, so that’s the only reason I feel like the book could have been a tad bit better. Great read! Different from the average thriller.

This is a hauntingly realistic horror story. I felt like someone was creeping up on me the whole time I was reading it. Medina effortlessly weaves Native American mythology, a coming of age story, the legal holes that allow non-natives’ crimes to go unpunished on Native land, and a harrowingly realistic portrait of sex trafficking and missing Native women.
Sisters of the Lost Nation is a fictional tale about the real life problem of missing Indigenous women in our country. I loved how Medina mixed in different Native American legends in creating the fictional Takoda tribe. The book places a great emphasis on preserving Native American culture. Medina also highlights the discrimination and the lack of government support and action that Indigenous people face while living on reservations.
The story is also a coming of age story for our main character, Anna Horn. Although the main part of the story takes place within a 37 day time period, us as readers are able to see Anna grow in her confidence and become the person she is meant to be. Anna is the heart of the book.
I was confused how this book was classified as horror. Yes there is a particular legend throughout the book that focuses on a pretty horrifying rolling head that seeks revenge. But ultimately the book is really about the horror of sex trafficking and its victims. Medina painted a true depiction of sex trafficking that is important for people to read. It's not the stories of children being kidnapped out of the blue at Walmart, but rather a process of grooming and manipulation. A horror that disproportionately affects women of color.
My only complaint about this book is that the pacing and format made it hard to read at the beginning. The back and forth in the timeline made it a little hard to follow. However as I grew used to the format it was hard to put down.
A definite recommendation from me and make sure to read the author's note at the end.
