This was a haunting story about what it means to be an Indigenous person, a sister, and someone who sees the truth when no one else does. Anna was brave, stubborn, spirited, and, more importantly, a storyteller. This shined a light on the real perils of missing Indigenous woman, highlighting a too sad reality that they face. Anna was a perfect vehicle for this story that Medina put together beautifully. While the Takoda tribe is fictional, his author’s note discusses the tribes he pulled stories from and it is clear to see how much care and consideration he put into this work. The time period is ambiguous (pre-booming technology), but lends to the feeling of otherness that permeates this book. This really is a fantastically haunting story.

This is a really powerful story. I remember seeing a protest in a park once about missing and murdered indigenous women and I appreciate the novel trying to share these stories and highlight this crisis. I wouldn’t call it horror. I almost didn’t pick it up because I don’t tend to like horror or scary stuff. The horror is the reality of the missing women. So it felt much more like realistic fiction than anything supernaturally horror. I also struggled with the timeline jumps in the book and sometimes within chapters too. I listened to the audiobook which could be why. Overall I recommend!

Maybe 4.5 stars but this book had so much depth— of characters, of history, of realness. I’m still emotionally processing this book and what it means. It’s such a powerful debut and I’m very glad I picked it up.

An eye opening story that really made me sit and think for a while on the experience of people in these situations.
Annas worst nightmare comes true as her sister goes missing along with other young girls from the reservation. The way these missing girls were treated throughout this story is absolutely deplorable, I couldn’t even begin to understand why they weren’t looking for them. The fact that they were being taken advantage of by one of their own and being SOLD OR KILLED was absolutely awful. Amazing story that makes you think hard on life experiences of others.
