Well-written and engaging, this book covers the very real current-day issue of missing and murdered indigenous women. Though I feel like the book was a touch incorrectly-labeled (the description promised supernatural horror, of which I got none) I thought it was a very solidly put-together thriller/crime fiction novel. The characters and their plights were so real, and I kept hurrying to turn the pages to find out what happened next.

This was a fantastic story and a really impressive debut novel. It’s a story that needs to be told and Medina does so in a way that emphasizes it’s importance and cals the reader to action to support missing and murdered Indigenous people in our communities and all over. 4 stars instead of 5 mostly due to the way the book was structured; it jumps around in time, especially in the early part of the book, in a way that made it a bit confusing to follow. Part of what exacerbated this was that I listened to the audiobook, so maybe those reading the print version had less of an issue with this, but it took me a while to figure out the timeline and it felt like an unnecessarily confusing way to build the plot. Outside of the confusing timeline, I really enjoyed this book.

This book was fairly difficult to get into mainly due to the slow pacing. The jumps between past and present drag the story. The book definitely draws its strength from centering around the trauma and tragedy of MMIWG2S in indigenous communities. Despite being predictable, it still had plenty of emotional punch at the climax which is a credit to the author. I am really looking forward to reading more from this author.
