I’m not going to rate a kids book because I’m not the target audience but I will say children’s lot has come real far. In many ways it felt very dated and of its time, but it never lulled and I could see this being a fun read for kids. Sometimes I wish it would slow down (and cut out a few of the seemingly meandering journey) in order to afford reflection beyond despair that they might get the help they desire. There was a rhythmic component as the companions joined that was cute and memorable.
I mostly read this slowly alongside reading Wicked.

I've been a fan of the 1939's movie all my life and I knew coming into this book that there would be differences that might affect my reading process but what a lovely time I had reading this. I loved the differences, I understand them completely, and now I appreciate both pieces so much.
Yes, the book is "darker" and flushes out more some details and places (and presents some that the movie doesn't) but I missed my Ruby slippers (which I have in my closet for not no apparent logical need) and at the same time, I wished the movie would have included the Good witch of the North and the book's portrait of Glinda (who is actually the Good Witch of the South).
I will definitely continue with this long series when I can get my hands on them, It's a really nice base for today's fantasy series.

I came to this book too late in my life path. However, I look forward to reading it to my grandchildren, should I be so blessed. After all, it was written for them.
This is a, yes, wonderful retelling of an old favorite. I particularly enjoyed the element of contemporary humor included in this production, though I imagine some might find it off putting.
