I am so glad this series is back! I was privileged to get an advanced reader copy. The book will be released April 7.
Three similar murders, over the span of 60 years, take place around Millers Kill. In 1972 MKPD Chief Russ Van Alstyne was a suspect for one of them, as a newly returned and PTSD-stricken Vietnam veteran. Now he must solve the murders, just as a campaign is underfoot to dissolve MKPD. At the same time, he's a new dad in his 50s, and his wife Claire is juggling her priestly duties with caring for the baby.
I loved this book, as I've loved all of Spencer-Fleming's books. Her writing is exquisite and her characters are thoughtfully crafted. I'm a writer myself, so when I need inspiration, I go back to her books.
I'd give this book 4.5 stars because of the ending. The wrap-up of the mystery seemed anticlimactic. I'd also been hoping to have a resolution to the frustrating Hadley Knox-Kevin Flynn impasse. Nope! The consolation is that the cliffhanger ending indicates there will be more books in this series.

I've enjoyed this whole series of mysteries and this was no exception. Waiting 6 years between installments was unusual but the understandable delay was due to a series of sadnesses the author experienced. Glad she's back at it. Police chief Russ and Episcopal priest Clare are adjusting to new parenthood, there is a movement afoot to shut down the local police and combine forces with a larger city, Clare accepts a new intern and the stories of Kevin Flynn and Hadley Knox are further developed. Is this new murder related to some unsolved murders from the past? Good story with perfect set-up for more episodes to come.

I enjoyed this book. It is later in the series, so likely it would be better to try an earlier entry for a new reader; however, because this book takes place in three very different time frames, it is also a great stand alone. There is a lot of history on each character as we see them in the past. Excellent characters, good plot with a few twists. The narration was fabulous! Suzanne Toren does an excellent job with consistent performances for even secondary characters.
Really enjoyed this book. A good mix of crime and mystery.

Oh I love this series so much. Clare and Russ are getting used to life with a newborn, a proposal to get rid of the local police department and have the state take over, as well as a dead body that may or may not be murder related and is reminiscent of two other murders from 1952 and 1972. Complicated and well written as usual.
The solution to the mystery here is so grotesque and far-fetched that it was beyond disappointing. The story about Clare and Russ and the other Millers Kill police is engrossing. But there are two many dangling endings! Will Russ have to lose his job? Will Clare continue to pop pills? Will Hadley and Flynn ever get back together?
