This book was a long slog for me with multiple renewals from the library. I felt like I was always grasping at some meaning just out of reach. The language was incredible and the realities of being women in Zimbabwe. But I've never been a fan of books that are a long slide into despair or distress.
Global Read Challenge 3: Zimbabwe
I think that I should have read the first two books first. This book was very engaging and well written but I often had to put it down because I was so frustrated with the main character.

Uma narrativa muito rica em detalhes sobre a cultura do Zimbabwe, narrada na segunda pessoa, sempre do ponto de vista da protagonista. Muito bom. Primeiro livro desta autora que leio.

The story is just happening. Nothing gripping.
Another Booker prize nominee I probably wouldn't have picked up had it not been nominated. I'm very grateful I did though, and sooner or later, I will also read the first and second book in the trilogy. I found it hard to properly access the story without knowing much about Zimbabwe's history since the book doesn't give a lot of background information. That, however, is entirely on me and made reading this while having the Wikipedia page on Zimbabwe open a very enriching experience.

I read this without knowing this is the third installment from a trilogy. As it can be read as a standalone it also requires effort and it can be frustrating to some readers, I think readers who reads the two previous books can digest this story much more better and appreciates it more.
Having said that, the story was told from a second person of view and can be confusing at first. It took me longer to adapt to this point of view.
The story focusing on Tambu's life and her struggles to become successful despite her cultures, personal history, psychology, post war society, the racisms and corruptions of their country. There's a lot going on in this book.
I found that the name of the characters sometimes can be a bit confusing as it introduced as Freedom or Concept. Took me awhile sometimes to access that it's a character names actually. Some phrases can be quite challenging since it's not in english. Overall I love seeing how Tambu growing up, moulding into a better and better person and being successful and happy at it.

The outset is remarkably interesting in that the main character is referred to as “you” and at times this gets inside your, that is the readers, skin and questions arise as to what you would have done yourself in a certain situation. Especially as the main character isn’t what you would call a “nice and whole hearted person”, rather a complex one.
So, in theory and at places this is a provocative and smart undertaking, though there are too much neo-realism in between for this to be interesting in a broader scale. I find it too thin as a whole.
