4.5 stars.

Possibly my favourite Little House book so far

I also really enjoyed this one. I thought it had one of the stronger storylines, structure-wise, in chronicling the family's move to South Dakota in which their excitement at the prospect of a new homestead starts to crack once the dream becomes reality. I also found the railroad camp along the way interesting since that's not really an aspect of Western life I see in much of the literature about the West.

I loved this one. Seeing how they settled in the west and how the town of de smet came to be was so interesting. Laura’s descriptions of the prairie were gorgeous and made me feel like I was coming home!

Book 5 is a pleasant read - I think perhaps in this one the Ingalls are finally settled. As in each of the previous books we get to see history unfold. In this one we get to see tar paper, train track building, claims, claim jumping, town building and even murder. Through it all there is a clear view of how Laura will eventually become the writer writing these books.

This one is probably my least favorite of Wilder’s novels depicting her life, but it definitely has it’s selling points.
It’s an excellent look at the time railroads were being built in the west and how rough life was on that open prairie.
Don’t skip this one!
