This might just be a case of “it’s not you, it’s me,” but I could already tell this wasn’t going to be a good match for me. The instalove and instant emotional bond between complete strangers gave me the immediate ick, it felt weirdly unforced where there should have been SOME resistance… and it wasn’t in a fun, fated-mates kind of way.
What really sealed it for me was the dynamic between the FMC and the so-called "brothers." The main character reads as clearly young, while the men come across as older, emotionally intense, and completely uninterested in boundaries. There was zero effort to build trust or connection, it’s just immediate claiming, instant intensity, and the vibe felt off. I could already feel some uncomfortable power dynamics and icky situations brewing, and I’m not here for that.
If you enjoy ridiculously fast-paced emotional connections and don’t mind skipping the whole “get to know you” phase, you might click with this. But I’m a slow-burn, tension-and-trust kind of reader, and this one just wasn’t it for me. Life’s too short to struggle through a couple hundred pages of sub-par smut.

Spicy. Spicy. Spicy.
Taboo. Triggers. And all the things. I did get to a point where I wanted to hurl the book across the room, but when a book pulls emotion out of me while reading, it's worth the read.

Nope! Absolutely not.! No no no no. Just no! For context; I started this book last year, and once I’ve started reading a book I’m dedicated to completing it. This book was no exception. Along with Fall of ruin and wrath by JLA , and court of the vampire queen these books were on a spicy recommendation list, and I should have known ALL SMUT ZERO PLOT! I should have known!! It almost did me in, and almost had to DNF it. But I did it! And all I can say is…. No!
You know what…. Here’s a little excerpt from this book; this is the therapist speaking to the FMC…
“Don’t let those cunts win, Ember. You go home and fuck the ever-loving brains out of your stepbrothers like the dirty bitch you are.” Then she’d slapped my arse and sent me on my way. Crazy bitch.

I love the darkest of dark romance, but this was awful. It is irresponsible in how events are handled given the deep gravity of the subject matter. The story was way too fast and somehow managed to drag, lacked depth, totally inconsistent. I wish I could unread it, quite frankly.
I hoped it would get better as I kept reading and basically from 17% to the end, I was pissed off. The bones of the story have the potential to tell an emotional, gripping tale. the Disney version of Cinderella carried worlds more depth and value than this horrible retelling.
The only redeaming features I noticed were that some of the main characters are likeable (even though they are very confusing, inconsistent, and lack depth to understand them) and there were some good spice scenes.
All of the characters are weak and don’t have well developed storylines of past and present. A traumatic backstory of a character that defines how they walk through life shouldn’t be detailed in a mere couple of sentences and with no build up. Far too casual. This has some serious reworking that needs to be done.
Some of the incredibly series plot matters in this should not have been written about unless they really drive the story and are essential to the plot or character history.
Given how poorly this story was written, the usages of suicide, rape and child prostitution as a plot device were so unnecessary given the lack of depth in the story. They seemed to only be there for shock value, and that is disgusting. I’m so disappointed and frustrated at this. This has the potential to put someone off reading. Author, do better.
