There is a general vagueness to Robert W. Chambers’ writing that works fantastically well for the first four short stories in this collection and really makes your head itch for the other five. The creepy tales of the titular King in Yellow are all quite excellent; they all feel like an interwoven tapestry that you can only look at while blindfolded and it smells like it was made with something that you know deep down shouldn’t be used to make a tapestry. The other stories are fine at best and confusing at worst. It feels like if you have a decent knowledge of Paris you might be able to follow along with them okay, but otherwise they all lack the punch of the earlier stories.

Remember liking this a lot, thought the commentary on gov's treatment of mental illness was striking. Want to go back & re-read sometime!

Not what I expected, but intriguing. Certainly worth the time.

I enjoyed this a lot. The stars are more for the edition, it was only in checking Wikipedia after reading that I found the edition I have contained only four of the original ten stories.

But they were very good.
