The Best of Me

David Sedaris

4.17 AVERAGE

I had to read this a few essays at a time because it’s just not the type of book I can devour. But it was funny! Some essays were ‘meh’ 3 stars for me, and some were hilarious 5 stars.

I liked the stories based on his life more than the fictional ones. He’s very witty but a bit too judgy for my taste.

Listened on audio. Sedaris reads it, and there is an interview at the end of the audio. I found myself laughing at points, but equally as often zoning out. His style is both comedic and melancholy. (It reminds me of Jimmy Buffet in that way. The comedy and up-beat is what you remember, but the lyrics are dark.) I give this 4 stars because the writing is just superb. Every story and essay had a turn of phrase that caused me to pause and think about his process and talent in general. The interview at the end is almost better than some of the essays. I was surprised with the choice of opening short story and the choice to go in chronological order of his writing. The final essays were far better than the first couple of chapters. I would read Calypso (most immediately prior) instead.

David Sedaris tends to be a hit or miss for me; this one was a hit. Funny and relatable (for the most part); good stories, told in a good order that flowed nicely.

Only giving this a lower rating because I’ve read these stories before in earlier book and thought this would be new stories, oops!

This was a hilarious book to listen to and I absolutely recommend listening to it with someone, so that you can just pause to double over in stitches with!

It took me several months of listening to this off and on to make my way through this book. I love his twisted sense of humor. My favorite stories were the ones that tell the story of the Sedaris family over the years.

My favorite so far. Although it included many stories I've already read, it also included more fiction than some of his other books. I really enjoy the absurdity of his satire.
