What can I say? David Sedaris is just one of the funniest people. Ever.
Uneven for me. I listened to it over a weekend. It made me laugh hard at times, but some pieces fell flat for me and a few were borderline offensive. I suspect he might be the type to refuse to capitulate to ‘political correctness’ maybe? There’s a good interview with him at the end where the interviewer asks him specifically about how certain essays age badly in light of changing cultural norms. Sedaris talked about editing pieces, so an essay like ‘6-8 Black Men’—where the ‘humour’ relies on the reader having racist ideas about black men—is really baffling. It’s also interesting when he includes pieces where he’s cruel or insensitive to his sister Tiffany or his father. It’s almost refreshing that he doesn’t stick to the easier approach that his fans probably appreciate more—acerbic humour mixed with poignant observation.
Listening to David Sedaris audio books is one of life’s greatest pleasures.

I love David Sedaris’s books. I’ve read and listened to almost all of them. I loved the theme of this book.
