Though the overall story is much different, Six of Crows gave me slight Lunar Chronicles vibes (one of my favorite series of all time). I think it's mainly because both, again, follow a group of characters working together to pull off (a) risky plan(s). The prison break-in was especially gripping—reading the alternating POVs and watching the pieces fall into place as the characters roamed the Ice Court was intense! Perhaps Six of Crows will earn a spot among my all-time favorite series, but I'll have to read the sequel in order to decide.
I'm giving this book five stars, but I still have a few minor complaints. First, there's a trope that I don't like that I am pretty sure is going to be used: The way the story is going, I feel like the six main characters are all going to end up pairing up with each other in relationships. I could be wrong, but it certainly looks like the story could head in that direction. I'm not necessarily *complaining,* but I find this trope unrealistic and sometimes annoying. On that same note, there was one relationship (or at least the beginnings of one) in particular that seemed underdeveloped—like it came out of nowhere. Additionally, there were a few times at which I found the alternating POVs a bit difficult to differentiate between. The whole book is in third person limited, which means that the POVs are still significant, but I think that also meant that the story sometimes fell into a vague "narrator" tone instead of the internal monologue of a specific character.
But overall, I very much enjoyed Six of Crows and I will be continuing on to Crooked Kingdom!

Wow! This has been on my TBR for awhile, and after watching the Netflix show, I couldn't wait to get into this book. It did not disappoint in the slightest. The characters are a gang of skilled criminals with a mix of backgrounds and motivations. A particular stand out for me was Inej, the crew's knife-wielding acrobat, and emotional heart of the group.
Compared to the Shadow and Bone trilogy, this series feels much more human. Though the characters at times can be just as supernaturally skilled, their struggles and desires feel more grounded. And their loyalty to one another is so compelling.
The world building in this series feels relatively subtle, with most of it devoted to set dressing and characters. Because this is part of a larger universe of stories, it is allowed to be more lax in what is introduced and explained, allowing more time to devote to the characters and their lives. I don't know if it would feel as natural to someone with zero experience with the world, but for me, it felt like the perfect amount.
This story had me rushing through it because I just had to see what happened next. The story is tightly constructed and the characters are so, so enjoyable.

I read the first chapter of this at least 4 times before I got in to it. But once I’d read the Shadow and Bone trilogy (which all and all disappointed me in lack of likeable characters), this was much easier to dive in to. Kaz is the morally grey fictional boy I can’t help but to love, and Nina and Matthias are the enemies to lovers I needed. The heist is confusing, but you go along with the ride, rooting for these characters.
