Disappointed in either me or the book itself or all the people who raved about it. When i grew to dread opening it, i finally gave up...

Wow! R.O. Kwon is a darned good writer. This book reminds me of Samanta Schweblin’s FEVER DREAM in that it’s a quick, un-put-downable read that makes brilliant use of language. Kwon’s sentences are tight, and her characters are flawed and feel very real. I only wish it were longer!

Um, my problem is that we find out that Phoebe is in a cult but not much of her behaviour indicated so. I feel there was a big gap.

I liked it BUT

Ugh. I'm always drawn to books about rich east coast prep students with fucked up lives. And almost every time I finish such a read I don't feel good about it. This book provided more of a spin with the inclusion of religion but still, I feel empty from the read. It was well written but nothing special.

This book moved along pretty quickly and didn't lag anywhere. I had a pretty big issue with the narration though. Was Will narrating both his story, Phoebe's, and John's? There was no noticeable difference in tone or voice when the chapters switched. I don't know if this was intentional, but it kept pulling me out of the story to remind myself who was talking. Either way, I really came to dislike Will; he is an unreliable narrator, but his reasons for being so shady are never made clear.
