Wow, this book was fucked up. I have a lot of thoughts on it, a good portion of which are in messages I physically couldn’t stop sending to close friends, but I would rather not let this review get any longer than it needs to be.
To start, I really wasn’t a fan of how the characters’ POVs are written here. I felt confused a lot. It was hard to tell which character was narrating, which character was talking to another character, etc. The style of Kwon’s writing just isn’t for me in general. I don’t mind having no quotation marks, at least, so that aspect didn’t bother me.
I found it to be irritating that the book often brushed over Will being a rapist. I’m fine with main characters being horrible people, but I wasn’t rolling with how the subject was handled here. I think it could’ve been written better.
Something I did really like from this book was the depiction of christian extremist cults. I thought the cult was written pretty well, and felt myself drawing occasional comparisons to the film Midsommar. I love me a cult story. It helps me sit down and evaluate just how easy it would be for myself to be indoctrinated, which is something I think everyone should assess.
The ending of this was rather bleak, so watch out for that. I don’t think I was too crazy about this one, but I had fun reading it.

Would have worked better as short stories maybe? Disjointed and disappointing, but the author is clearly a talented writer. Now if the plot/characters lived up to that artistry...

This book was pretentious in a way where I hated it, but couldn’t bring myself to care. I also don’t give a shit about the rapist narrator, whose obsession with Phoebe is unhealthy. Fuck this book.
Update: a few hours later and I can’t even summon up the will to be mad at this book, with it’s positive portrayal of sexual assault. Kwon definitely does NOT believe victims, and the evidence is more than abundant in her writing. She writes a rapist as a narrator. The worst part is that he feels no remorse for what he’s done. And he continues to harass and stalk his victim. Jesus Christ, no wonder she committed suicide. Even with all of the shitty things about this book, I can’t be mad. I just don’t give enough of a shit about this to care.
