DID NOT FINISH

dnf at pg 97.

I can see the poetry of the language evoking the reactions it got from critics, but not my personal cup of tea. The plot failed to capture me and the purple prose made it difficult to follow at times. John Leal’s sections were intriguing, but far too sparsely scattered through the dragging lovers plot line.

3.5 stars.

Honestly it was just fine. Most of the novel was about the main character's obsession with his girlfriend, who frankly is just kind of an asshole who's been through a bad experience. The most he seems to know about her is that she's hot. The main character himself is a Holden Caulfield type. Tbh I wouldn't really recommend it, most of the novel was spent obsessing over the girlfriend, barely any of it was about the actual cult itself besides vagueries about the leader, who wasn't all that interesting. The writing was pretty good overall though, despite being a little over descriptive at times.
There are better cult books out there.

i stayed up way too late reading the last 150 pages of this novel.

I received an ARC of this book through a Goodreads giveaway.

It tells the story of 2 college students who end up getting involved with a religious cult. The writing style is a bit hard to get used to.

While the storyline was interesting, I just didn't connect with the characters. In fact, I disliked all of them. There are other books I have loved but hated the characters, but for some reason this one didn't work for me.

I thought it was a good book; just not a great one.

The author doesn't use quotation marks

Man this was grim, and full of misogyny, but very good.
