One goal I have this year is to learn more about climate change, and this was a good way to wade into that topic. While this is very informational, it is grounded in narratives of people who have experienced the negative effects of climate change. The human focus made this really easy to read & learn. That being said, this is also a scary read because you can see just how much our world is changing due to climate change. With the US essentially deciding to ignore climate change initiatives, this verges on a horror novel.
I found this to be a good overview of the types of climate disasters that people in the U.S. are facing. The individual stories were heartbreaking and a compelling way to stress the importance of the issue. The last chapter was my favorite, as it focused on policy recommendations. But I felt the balance of the stories and the policy was off. The stories were organized by location rather than type of disaster, so they started to feel a little repetitive after a while and I wished that time had been spent digging deeper in the politics of climate change and potential policy solutions. I think this is a really good starting point for someone who needs to be convinced that climate change is urgent and action is needed, but doesn’t contain a lot of new information for folks who’ve been tuned in for a while. Still worth the read for me because of the personal experiences, and I was impressed by Bittle’s writing in telling their stories.
A look at the climate crisis of the United States through several very personal interviews of those directly impacted by it. Excellent reading and honestly a bit depressing. It's astonishing how so many once in a century events have become almost yearly.

I liked this book -- however I think the conclusions drawn at the end could have been more radical (or at least more direct). Shelter should be a right, which means we have to rethink having the housing market be the cornerstone of the American economy. I think he stopped just shy of saying this, and I wish he had!

I listened to the audio book and it was giving podcast vibes. I don’t think I would have enjoyed reading the physical copy as much. However, I enjoyed that the book focused on real climate events and included experiences of climate migrants. I would recommend everyone read this book to understand the severity of the climate crisis we are all facing
