That cliffhanger! This was a sloooooowww burn. Lots of banter and tension made for a very good fantasy with dragons, knotting, mates, kings and evil priests.

I really, really tried to power through this. I made it 44% through and in that 44%.......... of wading through murky water trying to find a hint of a plot point. Just a sliver of development.
The first 5% of the book was the most interesting. Isavelle ran away and got saved by Zabriel (twice). And that was good! But then, just nothing. The plot had a fade to black moment and never made an appearance again.
Nothing happened to significantly further Isavelle and Zabriel's relationship. He purposely kept her in the dark about who he was, how him and her weren't human, how alphas, betas and omegas work. And when he does give her some sort of reasoning as to why things are happening the way they are (like him giving her a nice room, or why he isn't going to let her leave the castle) she demurs and straight up doesn't seem to be hearing what he's saying. She comes up with reasons why none of this can be true.
And all that could have been excellent plot points had the plot not been as dull as a dead lightbulb. There was no exploration into Isavelle's trauma, no deep dive into her self image, there was no critical thinking on Zabriel's part about why Isavelle and all the rescued woman feel and act the way they do (terrified), there was no sufficient background given about Zabriel or the dragons at all.
And to top it all off. Some of the scenes and dialogue just seemed so pointless to whatever climax of the plot we were heading towards - not that I could foresee any climax coming. A children's carousel had more drive than this story.
I wanted to like this so bad. I'm so disappointed. Dragons? Fated mates? Alpha/omegas? Fantasy? A daring rescue?! Yes! That's what I love! I so wish I had liked this! But it got to the point where I was almost halfway through and still had over 8 hours to go and I just couldn't.
Ugh, oh well, rant over. I'm glad other people loved it more than me.

The plot idea is interesting and had a ton of potential. I dont personally like slow burns, but if you do this book is for you. It felt like it took the entire book for the FMC to show interest in the MC which wasn't for me.
