The book The Flame King's Captive by Chloe Chastaine, narrates the story of Isavelle, a young girl who has had a difficult life, full of violence and abuse. The book takes you on a journey of Isavelle's adventure as she navigates her way through the challenges of life. Isavelle is forced to marry a man she doesn't love, but before the marriage, dragons attack, and Zabriel, the leader of the attackers, saves her. Even though he rescues her, Isavelle is afraid of him and his dragon. She is also uneasy with the things he says about mates and alphas.
Isavelle tries to run away from Zabriel, but he finds her and takes her in. Despite her constant rejection of him and his dragon, Zabriel is smitten with her, and he allows her to do whatever she wants. The author does an excellent job of creating tension between the two characters, and it takes a while for Isavelle to warm up to Zabriel's alpha ways.
Throughout the book, the author does an excellent job of portraying the emotional turmoil that Isavelle goes through. You can't help but feel sorry for her and root for her to overcome her challenges. The book is well-written, and the characters are well-developed. The plot is engaging, and the pacing is just right. Overall, this is a must-read for anyone who loves a good romance novel with a touch of fantasy.

** ARC review **
I did not have omegaverse with dragons on my bingo card for 2025, but here we are! “The Flame King’s Captive” is the first installment of the “Fire and desire” series.
Isavelle is a Veiled Virgin, she is meant to be tossed to the pyre and die alongside her king, but the moment that happens, a man riding a dragon rescues her. Zabriel has just found his mate, his omega, in the middle of a war with humans, and he will do everything to keep her safe.
“The Flame King’s Captive” explores Zabriel’s journey to a new world. After five hundred years in exile with the other dragons, he awoke and now battles the humans to liberate them from their cult-like ruler. He faces a lot of challenges with the people and how they were all brainwashed by the cult to forget all about dragons and alphas/omegas, but the bigger challenge he has is Isavelle. Isavelle was given to the religious leaders as payment when her parents could not afford to pay their part. The priests have tortured and abused Isavelle, so when Zabriel is kind and nurtures her, she takes a long time to accept it.
Zabriel is incredibly patient with her, but he also makes mistakes. He wants to go slow because he realises Isavelle takes a long time to accept what she truly is and also sometimes hides things that are important to her because he fears she will break. Isavelle also does not make things better since she refuses her designation and suffers during her false heats, since she believes that any kind of intimacy is wrong. And that is one of the plot points that is better explored - how Isavelle should let go of all the poison in her mind regarding her sexual needs and let go to embrace the future. A future with Zabriel by her side. I did understand Isavelle’s struggle, especially with wanting to take control of her life. She got rescued from death just to be told what she was going to do next in her life: she’d be Zabriel’s wife and queen. She didn’t ask any of that, she just wanted to see her parents and figure out life. In a way, it is understandable that Isavelle takes so much time to adapt to everything. Her designation as an omega confuses her, her body changes, she has to accept a fate that she never asked for. The struggle they both have with their lives it’s not an easy one.
The world-building is pretty good, I found myself more drawn to the spicy scenes and to the worldbuild than maybe to some scenes that were a little repetitive, but once the omega verse kicks in, the book is amazing and it reads like a dream. I think I read it in four hours.
“The Flame King’s Captive” is a solid start to a series with a lot still to explore, it has a lot of twists but it sets the pace and the tone for the rest of the books, where we will see Isavelle becoming Zabriel’s mate and Zabriel struggle to unite the kingdom and its people.

Everything i didn't know i needed after finishing Fourth Wing.
Its hella spicy, but also a slow burn romance where they don't actually do the deed until the end of the book. Were talking fated mates, dragons, castles & magic, evil priests and an alpha/omega/beta set up. Absolutely Devine. i haven't stopped thinking about it since i finished it, cannot wait to read the second one after the cliff hanger!!!
