To be fair, I haven't read any of Kathy Reich's other books, so it's hard to measure this book in context. On the whole, I found the choppy delivery off-putting -- so many short declarative sentences, so much terse dialogue. However, Sunday's broken past and interesting network of support carry the book along nicely, and the fast paced mystery flows. It's a thriller, with the genius-leaps to move it along that you might expect, even if some are a little less believable than others.

I’m a fan of Kathy Reich’s’s Temperance Brennan series so I was eager to read this standalone novel featuring Sunday Night. I loved the ‘surprise twist’ ending (although it was satisfying that I guessed it along the way). The cast of characters was interesting and well drawn. Since all of them have many more stories to tell, I hope the author has plans for a Sunday Night series!
This is a new series, I think anyway, by this author. I actually picked this one because I have read and enjoyed all of the Tempe Brennan books. I was expecting something maybe along those lines but I was wrong. Sunday Night is nothing at all what I thought she would be like, which is actually fine and does work well for this book. To say that I loved this new character is wrong, I was not crazy about Sunday Night, I actually liked August "Gus" Night better. Sunday is a bit too much of everything, in my opinion, too angry , too ballsy , too tough acting , she almost comes off as trying too hard to be this gritty hard as nails bad ass woman. The plot itself, find the granddaughter, kidnapped in an explosion, of a cantankerous wealthy older woman who hates everyone was a bit slow for me. Sunday is racing against time to stop another bomb plot and find the people responsible. This sounds like it would be fast paced and exciting but it fell short for me. Sure the story line and characters are solid as pertains to the plot and the book itself is very well written and a quick read so for that gave it three stars.
I am not sure if there is another book in this series I will read it but who knows. This was fast paced and a solid plot but for me it did not really work. This review was originally posted on Cindy's Book Binge

I had a hard time getting into this book. Thought the storyline was good, but I felt the character development wasn't quite there. Needless to say, the last scene of the book was really the only reason why I gave this book 3 stars.
2...The first 29 chapters...I couldn't wait for the book to be over!!!! The last couple chapters were pretty fast paced BUT not good enough!!! A really good story but it felt like it dragged for me! Found myself staring at the clock hoping for it to end! Just not my cup of tea, I guess!

Refreshing read. I am thrilled to see Kathy Reichs step away from Temperance Brennan and give us a character who is rough around the edges, one with loads of baggage living the life of a recluse on Goat Island.
Sunnie Night is pulled out of her self-imposed isolation when her friend and foster dad Beau asks her to hunt down the people responsible for the death of a local dowager’s daughter and grandson and investigate the abduction of the old woman’s granddaughter. It has been over a year since the girl went missing. Beau convinces Sunnie that her military training along with events in her past give her an edge that other law enforcement agencies lack. Sunnie begrudgingly accepts the challenge.
Sunnie is no Tempe Brennan. She is angry and bitter at all that life has thrown her way. She is also a trained ex-SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, and escape). She will need all her training as she follows leads all over the country knowing in her gut the girl is still alive. I loved the fast pace of this novel. The bad guys are larger than life, taking on an almost cartoon-like persona but Sunnie, with some timely help is not frightened off by their actions. Bonus points go to Sunnie who unlike Temperance knew when to call in the authorities and keep them informed when the case became so much more than a simple child abduction.
If you enjoy solving mysteries with the biggest mystery being the protagonist herself this is a fun read. When the case is dusted and done we still don’t know all we’d like to know about her.
What I do know is that I would love the opportunity to spend more days with Sunnie Night. She’s got an edge that Dr. Brennan has been missing for a while. Kudos to the author for adding some grit and damaged psyche to her heroine.

Sunday Night, a woman who used to be a cop before an accident, is contacted to help an elderly woman find a missing loved one. The young girl went missing after a bomb went off. It is up to Sunday to find out if the girl died in the explosion or if someone kidnapped her with malicious intent.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved he characters and it kept me guessing page after page. Knowing that Sunday had her own demons to face while looking for the young girl gave the character motivation.
