DNF - I forced myself to keep reading for a while but it was seriously painful. The opposite of a slow burn and completely forced. I only made it to Chapter 13 (Start of Part 2 of 3) because the main character was making me feel crazy. She starts saying things like "for the first time I wanted to go home" when she had been whining the entire first chapter about how she wanted to go home. I felt like she had zero self awareness. The MMC is an asshole and treats her horribly for no go reason and she just "plays the game" but what even is the game?? Nobody is forcing her to sleep with him!!!

I could go on forever but there was also very limited world building, which is not too big of a deal for a stand alone fantasy but I didn't connect with a single character and at a third of the way through the book I would like to feel connected to at least one of them.

This was a decent standalone after reading a series.  It is a bit dark but it was a fun read.  The characters started out a bit younger when they met each other but it really took off once they were older (she was 18).  The MMC was dark and broody and the FMC was conning and I feel they both were a bit morally gray which was fun.  The spice did take off pretty quickly and it was a lot of spice.  3.75/5 stars for me!
