I have been a fan of the Foo Fighters a Nirvana for many years and I always knew that Dave Grohl was an amazing musician. This book has shown me just how great he truly is. He does what he does for the sake of loving the music, not just for the money. Grohl loves what he does and you can tell by all the heart and soul he puts into his work. The book was excellent at taking us through Dave's life; from his first record purchased, to drumming with Nirvana, to the latest album as leader of the Foo Fighters. Although the beginning of the book was a little slow, with the introduction to the underground music scene in America, it was a great read overall. I recommend this to anyone who likes Nirvana or Foo Fighters, or someone who just loves a good book about rock n roll. Dave Grohl is a truly great American musician.
Took me forever to get through for some reason, but it was very interesting and I enjoyed it once I really sat down with it. The sections about the DC punk scene lagged a bit for me, but once I got past that part it really flew, and the sections about Nirvana and the Foo Fighters were easier for me to get through. This book also gave me a case of the "Didja know's"- For example, didja know Dave Grohl was offered the drummer job for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers after the end of Nirvana?
The other side effect of reading this was a huge uptick in my mp3 purchases, and scouring the internet for copies of various bootlegs and albums- which I should've known, and added the price of all this music to the cost of the book!

I finished the book when I got it. the year it came out. I can't remember it too well after about half way through the book though. the date listed is the last time I tried to reread the book.
I bought this book because it it caught my eye on the shelf in a bookstore one day. The cove is all pretty and kind of pop art-esque. I knew the book was unofficial, and it was really just written from a bunch of interviews, with a whole lot of filler. That's pretty much what this book is. I mean, do I really need to read so many pages about Kurt in a Dave Grohl book? i've already read a ton about him. I like Sunny Day Real Estate, but I don't care to read about them, or really pages and pages about the Grohol's (not a spelling mistake). In the end I pretty much got what I paid for, a book that will sit on my shelf and look pretty, but probably rare if ever be read again. What I really need in an official biography. Dave Grohl is really like the face of my generation, this book kind of marks us "getting there" , where they want to market crap to us. That's about all it is. A pretty cover.
Not that great. This is a biography and missing much info. The author spent way too long describing origins of punk bands, Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and other aspects. These were clearly useful but often distracting. As typical for some of these books, so much time is spent on the first few songs or albums that the last few chapters just gloss over Grohl's later life.
Anyone who is a fan of Nirvana, Foo Fighters, or anything Dave Grol has ever done should read this. A great book!
It's unfortunate when a book gets so bogged down with other unecessary information it gets to be a chore to read... and it clearly doesn't have enough stories about the original purpose to sustain an entire book so it needed to rely on other stories to attempt to dazzle the reader. I normally don't rate books I couldn't finish, but this particular book wasn't all that good in the 58% of it that I did manage to trudge through, so I thought it needed a rating. If you don't mind minimal facts/stories about Grohl himslf, and lots more about the punk scene, Cobain and various other stuff, then read this book, otherwise it's probably best to hold your ponies for another Grohl bio and skip this one.
I love Grohl, so great little read, full of insights about the bands he's been part of.
