I am a big fan of this series and have read all of the previous books. That helps when keeping track of all of the characters introduced in the story since I am familiar with all of the main characters. The book mainly focuses on a current case of a missing little girl, alternating with a prior case of another missing child that didn't end well. In addition, there is a flashback to 1671 with a local woman being accused of being a witch that has a surprising tie to the events occurring in the present day. The book also includes two currently relevant subplots of Syrian refugees settling in Sweden, and two outsiders being bullied by the popular teenagers in the town. Both play an important part of the main plot.

Erica is working on a true crime book of the older case and her research is useful to her husband Patrik, a detective working on the current missing child case. As always, I enjoyed their characters individually and together. I enjoy the scenes with Erica and her sister as well as Patrik and the other detectives. Some of the descriptions of the crimes and events which take place in both the present and the past are disturbing to read. I was able to get through them and couldn't wait to find out what really happened in the past cases and the present and how they were tied together.

I am always eager to read the next book in this wonderfully written series and although it could be a while, I'm already looking forward to the next one.

Me gustó.

This follows the same format as the other books in the series. Erica writing a book that threads into an old crime in her home town that impacts on new events/deaths. It comes up to date with Syrian refugees in small town Sweden and the frictions this causes. Also the old story weaves the history of witchcraft through the narrative.
Rather too many characters, strands, serendipity for me but certainly a page turner and I love the "family" of characters

Camilla Lackberg The Girl in the woods

Visit the locations in the novel

This had all the Lackberg magic and more. Tough subjects - death of two children years apart, abuse of immigrants and women suspected of being witches (The Witch is the title in Swedish) but this all worked well with the familiar Patrik and Erica domestic storyline.

Two girls suspected of a murder. One returns back to the town, years later, now a famous actress. The other one lives nearby, her name changed and with a family of her own. A girl goes missing from the same farm as little Stella did years earlier. The two girls confessed and then recanted their confession. Now another girl has gone missing from the exact same place. Coincidence?

Well Fjallbacka just got a bit more chilling! There's jealousy, small farms with very bad vibes, isolated lakes and trees, and a refugee centre outside the town....and guess who the first suspects are of this latest murder? The book looks at these issues well. Opinions of locals, society at large of what kind of people these immigrants must be...Very apt for today.

The murder mystery and history of the two girls suspected of murder was interesting. One glamorous and famous, the other quietly living nearby. The two cases of the missing girls is also told in varying chapters and this works well. Two victims, two murderers. But is this the case?

The historical and witch themes of the book took this to another, more complex, yet intriguing level. AT the start I found this confusing and was this going to be completely necessary to the plot? WEll , yes of course, this is Camilla Lackberg. She wove it into a spell by the end.

A great novel from Camilla. I miss Patrik and Erica (I read the other books ages ago) and it's good to be back. Roll on the next one!
