an absolutely unforgettable ride of a book. neil gaiman can be a bit weird at times but that's what makes his books so lovely <3
medium-paced
This book reminded me a lot of the strange and imaginary world that Alasdair Gray created in Lanark. The main difference is that Lanark was like 900 pages and so confusing that I lost interest almost immediately after I started reading it, whereas Neverwhere held my attention with it's charming and sometimes terrifying characters, and the magic of a magical world beneath London. I wouldn't say this book is a must-read, but it kept my interest.

Read this years ago. The edition I have was first published in 2000, which kind of shows you how long ago I must have read it.
It's one of my favourite books of all time. I am due a re-read soon, so when I re-read I will update this review.
For now, I will leave it short and sweet: love the overall premise, the characters, the plot, and the setting. One to keep, re-read, and enjoy for years to come.

Under the streets of London there's a place most people could never even dream of. A city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, knights in armour and pale girls in black velvet. This is the city of the people who have fallen between the cracks. The city of Neverwhere...
The story was a little slow at the beginning but it picked up later. I can never tell if it feels more slow paced to me because fantasy is not my usual genre of choice. Despite this, Gaiman has a brilliant, vivid imagination of his mystical other worlds and I enjoyed being transported to the shadowy, dangerous realm of Neverwhere. A great tale with two un-seen plot twists, one of which utterly shocked me! A great read for any fantasy genre lover!

This was my first time reading Gaiman and it really surprised me how alike Gaiman's writing style is with Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. The main character Richard was like straight from Adams's trilogy and made me a bit confused. I still really enjoyed this book. Some awesome, fresh ideas and interesting characters (some of them quite stereotypical, but still nice).
It is always a wonderful experience reading stories by Neil Gaiman. I have always been a fan of his writing. After finishing Neverwhere, my admiration towards Gaiman's writing has skyrocketed. The story is a masterpiece, an absolute joy to read.
