Rules of Prey

A typical murder/serial killer novel, but I enjoyed it. I will definitely be reading more of the series.

Years before reading this I had received Shadow Prey as a gift. It was a pretty good read but nothing really special.
In fact, when I first started my website I didn't even bother reviewing it with the first batch of books since I had no real strong feelings about it one way or another. I just remembered it as OK
but forgettable.
Now when Jason, who's been a visitor to my site, sent me a few emails imploring me to read Sandford's Prey series, I had told him I had read Shadow Prey but wasn't really keen on reading more. Then he told me that one was actually the weakest of the series.

So, in 1999 I was in Toronto airport en route to a skiing holiday in Whistler, B.C. and I was almost about ready to start another novel and was hoping to pick up Jeffrey Deaver's The Bone Collector.
The book store didn't have it, but then there was Rules of Prey and I thought, aw what the hell. Thanks Jason. This is the first of the series and the first novel in a long time to actually trigger a nightmare for me. There's one murder in particular that really got to me and if you've read the novel you probably know the one I'm talking about.

The Maddog is a vicious, merciless sociopath and so meticulous in his crimes you wonder if the police are ever going catch a clue to him.
I'm not too sure if I like Lucas Davenport or not...there wasn't a whole heck of a lot revealing about him as a person but I'm hoping later novels have more developments. And I will read more of these!

Incidentally, there were some really interesting tidbits in here should I ever decide lead a life of crime, like using a potato as a weapon or an ingeniously simple way to free a door chain!

I enjoyed the build up of the plot/murder case, the ending was a bit anticlimactic for me though. overall a solid 3-star read. I will be reading another one of the books in this series

Man, I was really rooting for it to turn out differently. I enjoyed the way Sanford portrayed the killer, how he thought and executed his plans. But I was disappointed in the end. It was such a good climax and then it just fell short for me. I'm not sure if I will continue with the Davenport series, although I did enjoy his character immensely. And FYI: it is "must HAVE or should HAVE, not "of." A little lesson in grammar for Mr. Sandford. :)

Quick action and great suspense. I am glad I started this series finally!

Really good detective novel. Really enjoyed Lucas’ character. Will definitely read more.
