Recommended to me while I walked on a treadmill next to an author of a currently well-received biography of Diderot. The author is a crime/mystery fan. I recommended Don Winslow and Paul Doiron, and he recommended Sandford. One of those books that pulls you from page to page. And somehow I'm able to accept that game-designer cop who drives a Porsche, and is appealing to every woman who crosses his path. Praise for Prey's, and more Prey's to come.

I barely made it through this book. It was part of a challenge so I clearly couldn’t DNF, but I definitely wanted to! Yeah the book is over 30 years old but I do not know how it’s a series… the main character is awful. And there’s a huge difference between watching a crime show and reading intense descriptions of SA and murder. I would not recommended this book at all.
Graphic: Rape, Stalking, Murder
I don't like the main character, which makes this hard to get into. He's a womanizer, which makes this book very predictable. Sandford introduces a woman, you know Lucas Davenport will sleep with her. I reckon the whole series will be this way but I already bought a few so I'll keep reading. I know for a fact he will continue to be a misogynist ass.
A little corny but fun as shit. Loved that it takes place in The Twin Cities. Davenport is interesting and hard to pin down. Made me want to read more. And move back home.
Fun crime thriller. I'd read more in this series.
Interesting story, don’t really like the detective. Enjoyed but disappointed as well. A detective who breaks all the rules - a womanizer, an anti hero. I can’t say more without spoiling it.
Lucas Davenport, as a lieutenant, practically runs the Minneapolis police force, or at least he runs the chief when it comes to the investigation of this serial killer. Lucas has money, smarts and quickly charms attractive women off their feet. The villain is smart enough to challenge him to find a way to end the killings. I appreciated how the reader was shown the character of Lucas Davenport without pages of artificial exposition laying it out. I have already laid hold of the next, Shadow Prey, and look forward to continuing the series.
Didn't found this suspenseful or entertaining as I had hoped. Found it tedious to follow maddog. Not a book for me
We have a loner cop and a crazed maddog killer working circles around each other. Davenport is a video game developer by night and womanizing detective by day (and night). The killer is 'working through" some childhood issues by killing women. The last half of the book flew by as cop and killer get closer and closer.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. John Sandford has a clean writing style and good character development. I'm looking forward to digging into the rest of the series.
